About Roguebook

Roguebook - about the game

Roguebook is a strategy indie RPG adventure that combines roguelike structure with deckbuilding on PC. Players navigate a living book of legends where each run presents fresh challenges through procedural maps and card synergies. The core loop involves selecting two heroes, building a shared deck, exploring hexagonal pages, and battling through encounters to progress toward defeating the book itself.

Gameplay

Combat centers on two heroes positioned front and back. The front hero absorbs incoming damage while the rear one supports with abilities. Switching positions mid-battle allows players to adapt to threats and trigger combos between the pair. Each turn uses energy to play cards from a combined deck drawn from both heroes' collections. Over 200 cards total offer varied effects, and unplayed cards discard at the end of the turn. Battles require careful planning of attack order and defensive timing against more than 40 enemy types and bosses.

Deck construction happens progressively during runs. Players collect cards from events, merchants, and rewards, then refine the build with upgrades. Thirty special gems modify card effects for greater power or utility. Eighty relics provide passive or active bonuses that alter strategies across runs. Each of the six hero pairs comes with over fifty unique cards, a personal relic, and a skill tree that unlocks additional options through leveling and page collection.

Exploration unfolds on procedurally generated pages made of hexagonal tiles. Magic inks reveal hidden patterns, paths, and encounters. Players paint sections to uncover merchants, travelers, ruins, quests, and potential traps. This system ensures every run feels distinct while rewarding thorough mapping for resources and upgrades. Progress carries forward through collected pages that purchase permanent improvements and hero levels that expand card access.

Game Modes

Roguebook operates as a single-player roguelike experience built around repeated runs. Each attempt starts with hero pair selection and proceeds through layered pages filled with combat, events, and exploration. Failure ends the run, but unlocks and upgrades persist for future attempts. Twenty difficulty levels scale enemy strength while introducing new relics, gems, and encounters. Completing the final boss on standard difficulty unlocks an Epilogue level that further increases challenge and rewards.

The structure emphasizes incremental mastery. Early runs focus on learning hero synergies and basic deck flow. Later levels test refined builds against tougher opposition. No separate multiplayer or versus options exist. All content centers on the campaign-style progression through increasing difficulties and the epilogue.

Hero Selection and Deck Synergies

Six hero pairs form the foundation of team building. Each pair brings distinct card pools and abilities that encourage experimentation with positioning and timing. Front-line protection pairs naturally with back-line support, but effective play often involves fluid switches to maximize damage output or defensive coverage. Skill trees add long-term customization, letting players prioritize cards or effects that suit preferred playstyles.

Relics and gems further differentiate runs. A relic might enable new card interactions while gems tweak existing ones for specific scenarios. The result is high replayability through varied combinations rather than identical decks repeating. Players assemble builds on the fly, adapting to what the current page offers.

Is It Worth Playing?

Roguebook delivers a focused roguelike deckbuilder with distinctive mechanics like dual-hero positioning and ink-based map revelation. The 20-hour average completion time for the main campaign expands significantly when pursuing full unlocks across all difficulties and epilogue content. Steam user reviews rate the game Very Positive, with 84 percent approval from nearly two thousand English reviews, highlighting the strategic depth and visual presentation.

The game suits players who enjoy deliberate deck crafting and positional tactics over pure speed or randomness. Those seeking fresh twists on the genre will find value in the hero switching and procedural painting system. Ongoing support appears limited since the 2021 release, yet the core experience remains intact and self-contained. Fans of similar titles will appreciate the emphasis on synergy building and run-to-run progression without needing external updates.

  • Procedural maps change every run for consistent novelty.
  • Difficulty scaling provides clear long-term goals through twenty levels plus epilogue.
  • Hero skill trees and relic collection reward persistent play.
