CATENA - Chapter I is an asymmetric couch co-op action-adventure game developed for PC. Two players control separate halves of the same character, connected by a chain that forces constant coordination while sharing a single life pool and one weapon.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on survival against mirrored threats across two planes of existence. Enemies in the physical realm appear as armored husks that require direct melee damage, while astral spirits demand banishment through wind-based abilities. Players must swap the shared sword frequently to switch between aggressive combos and protective tactical control.
Platforming and movement add another layer of tension. One half navigates high-speed slides across open terrain while the other times jumps across unstable surfaces. Runestones scattered through the environment provide temporary healing auras that serve as strategic anchors during prolonged fights. Loot from defeated foes grants short-term boosts such as shields, time dilation, and score multipliers that encourage aggressive yet synchronized play.
Character choice shapes the experience. The physical half embodies straightforward determination and optimism suited to the tangible world's demands. The astral half carries suppressed doubts and a more cautious outlook, influencing how each player approaches the same challenges from opposing perspectives.
Game Modes
The game operates exclusively as a two-player local couch co-op experience. Both participants control halves of Catena simultaneously, with no option for solo play or online matchmaking. Every encounter requires real-time communication and role swapping to manage the single shared health bar and weapon.
Exploration unfolds in a linear yet open-feeling sequence that begins inside a cave and expands into the wind-swept world of Ktonia. Runestones left by ancestors deliver environmental storytelling and functional benefits without branching paths or alternate objectives.
World and Setting
A massive rift has split reality, allowing the sorcerer Tabes to attack from both the physical realm and the astral plane. Players step into this fractured landscape as the echo of Catena, whose divided form becomes the only viable counter. The environment emphasizes verticality and momentum through windsurfing sections and crumbling platforms that test timing and trust between the two halves.
Ancient runestones serve as both narrative devices and practical tools. Their humming auras offer mid-combat recovery points that reward positioning and coordination over individual skill.
Development and Current State
Team Mouseworks, a group of five students, created the project over three months as part of a fifth-semester assignment at HNU. The title was showcased at Gamescom 2026 in its current work-in-progress form, with the developers noting that the presented build does not reflect final visual or mechanical polish.
The game carries a scheduled release window of November 2026 on PC. No additional chapters, updates, or expansions have been detailed beyond the core Chapter I experience.
Is It Worth Playing?
CATENA - Chapter I targets players who enjoy tightly coupled local co-op where success depends on constant communication and role flexibility. The shared life pool and single-weapon mechanic create immediate tension that rewards practiced pairs over casual drop-in sessions.
Because the project remains in active development ahead of its November 2026 launch, prospective players should monitor post-release patches for refinements to combat pacing and platforming precision. Those drawn to asymmetric two-player design and atmospheric exploration in a compact package will find the most direct appeal in the verified mechanics.
