About Fort Providence

Fort Providence - about the game

Fort Providence is a single-player action strategy indie game set on PC where players defend a frontier outpost against waves of undead attackers. The experience blends tower defense mechanics with roguelike run progression and permanent upgrades, creating a focused loop of tactical placement and resource management during short defensive stands.

Gameplay

Players position soldiers along the palisade walls, upper deck, and watch towers while collecting gold to arm and strengthen them. During each run, characters level up and select from skill cards ranging across three tiers to adapt defenses on the fly. Defenses include tipping kettles of boiling pitch to ignite crowds below, rolling fused powder kegs through hatches into approaching groups, positioning up to six mortars in the yard to control the road, and constructing eight watch towers on the surrounding rock. Nine varieties of the dead advance along the path, with later arrivals proving more resilient to standard attacks.

Additional support arrives if enough gold is gathered to dispatch riders for cannons and cavalry still scattered in the scrub. These reinforcements depend on how long the position holds before the run concludes. The core loop emphasizes careful placement of units and structures alongside timely use of environmental hazards like tar and black powder to thin enemy numbers.

Game Modes

The game centers on repeated defensive runs where the objective remains holding Fort Providence for two full days against the advancing dead. Each attempt functions as a self-contained session that ends in success or failure, after which collected Bulwark points carry forward into a ledger of permanent upgrades. These upgrades improve shell weight, timber strength, and soldier accuracy for future attempts, allowing gradual improvement without resetting progress between runs.

No separate named modes exist beyond this core defensive structure. The system encourages returning with stronger capabilities to extend survival times compared to previous efforts.

Progression and Upgrades

Bulwark accumulates regardless of run outcome and funds lasting improvements outside individual sessions. This meta layer ensures each new attempt begins with tangible advantages, such as more effective artillery or sturdier fortifications. Skill cards chosen mid-run provide temporary boosts that complement these permanent changes, creating variety across attempts without altering the fundamental goal of wall defense.

The design supports English, German, and Spanish interfaces, with progress saving automatically to maintain continuity across play sessions.

Setting and Themes

Fort Providence marks the end of the settlers' retreat in the Dead Man's Gulch story, where the road ends and digging in becomes the only option. The palisade, stationed men, and improvised weapons form the last line against relentless undead forces. Defensive structures receive emphasis as potential standout elements in prolonged holds, adding layers to placement decisions beyond basic soldier positioning.

Is It Worth Playing?

Fort Providence suits players who enjoy single-player strategy games focused on defensive positioning, resource timing, and incremental roguelike progression. The emphasis on permanent upgrades across runs provides clear motivation to attempt longer holds, while the variety of defensive tools and enemy types keeps individual sessions engaging. With a planned release on September 7, 2026, and no user reviews available yet, the game appeals most to those drawn to indie action strategy titles that reward careful planning and repeated attempts at the same core challenge.
