About Buzzwire

Buzzwire - about the game

Buzzwire is a casual indie game on PC that recreates the feel of hosting a live quiz show during game night. One player acts as the host while friends join as contestants, racing to answer trivia clues displayed on a shared screen. The setup works across local and remote groups without requiring extra software on contestant devices.

Gameplay

The host selects clue packs, reads questions aloud, and controls the reveal of answers on their own screen. Contestants join a room using a simple four-letter code on their phone or computer, turning the device into a buzzer. The main display shows the board, scores, and timers for everyone to follow. Connection lag is measured and subtracted automatically so the first true reaction wins regardless of distance. Hosts can lock rooms, remove players, or pause at any time. A dedicated console view keeps answers hidden until the host chooses to reveal them, preventing accidental spoilers. Tablet or gamepad support lets the host run the show from the couch without staying at a keyboard.

Game Modes

Local groups can use couch mode with one television and up to four controllers. Players claim seats by pressing a button and select arcade-style initials together. Buzzing happens with any face button while the D-pad steers the board. Supported controllers include those from PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam Deck through Steam Input. For the final round, contestants may switch to phones for wagering or simply write answers down. Remote sessions run through Discord screen sharing or OBS browser sources, with built-in sound effects. Viewers on Twitch can participate separately by answering clues on their own devices and tracking personal leaderboards. Chat commands allow the audience to vote on categories or attempt steals when no contestant answers correctly.

Customization and Content

Every rule can be adjusted before a show begins. Options cover the number of rounds, point values, hidden jackpots, final wagering, early-buzz penalties, answer timers, and whether scores may drop below zero. The game ships with more than 3,300 original clues spread across 18 starter packs. Each pack contains enough material for three boards, and every session draws a fresh random selection. Categories span general knowledge, history and geography, science and nature, food and drink, words and wordplay, books and art, mythology and legends, movies and television, music, sports, video games, internet and technology, anime and animation, kids and family, plus themed sets such as superhero cinema, capes and comics, sci-fi sagas, and fantasy epics. Classic wordplay formats like answers ending in Y, rhymes, hidden animals, before-and-afters, and shared-screen actors appear throughout. Hosts can build custom packs in an editor that mirrors the game board layout or import spreadsheets. Finished packs upload to the Steam Workshop for others to subscribe and use.

Additional Features

Stats track the quickest buzzers, closest races, longest streaks, and biggest comebacks. These appear on screen between rounds as ready-made talking points. Every show saves automatically so a crash or window close allows exact resumption. Players on the same room code reconnect without host intervention. Steam Cloud keeps packs and saves available across computers. Music comes from Ovani Sound and plays throughout the experience.

Is It Worth Playing?

Buzzwire suits groups that enjoy structured trivia nights with flexible hosting tools. The combination of phone buzzers, lag compensation, and Twitch chat integration makes it practical for mixed local and online audiences. Couch mode delivers straightforward controller play for living-room sessions, while streaming features let viewers join without taking contestant spots. Custom packs and rule tweaks keep repeated play varied. The built-in clue library provides immediate content, and the editor plus Workshop extend it further. Players looking for a party-style quiz experience that works across distances and audience sizes will find the mechanics reliable and the setup minimal. Those who prefer single-player campaigns or action-focused titles may want to look elsewhere.
