About Wars Across The World: Angola 1988

Wars Across The World: Angola 1988 - about the game

Angola 1988 covers the last year of the war in Angola. To win, both sides must either eradicate the enemy from the filed, or take control of all cities and keu location. Otherwise, Peace negotiations will end the game and victory will come to the one ahead in VP.

Angola 1988 is played in 18 turns, each representing 1 months between 1987 and 1988. One player represents the Communist side (MPLA with Cuban support) and itsr attempt to establish full control over Angola, the second represents the non-Communist liberations movements (mostly UNITA) and their Western Allies (essentially South Africa).

The MPLA should either capture all the cities in Angola or destroy enemy units there, or, if not possible, gain the Peace talks by having most VP at end of scenario. Their main assets are the excellent support provided by the Cubans.

The UNITA and their allies have less power initally, but the intervention of South Africa may tip the balance. They can win by full occupation of Angola key areas or desruction of the enemy forces there, or, at the Peace conference, by having most VPs. Their main assets (and weakness) are they key and powerful South Africans (but whose commitment can be uncertain).

Event cards will renew the game through a series of diplomatic, military and political fluctuations.

Average playing time: 2h30.

Favored side: MPLA.

Hardest side to play: UNITA.
