For two days Microsoft Defender told Sims players their game was a Trojan. It wasn't. EA has now pushed a hotfix.
Quick recap of the week The Sims 4 just had on PC. July 21, EA ships the patch that finally adds autosave after twelve years. Great. Two days later a pile of players can't get into the game at all, because Windows Defender decided the launcher was malware and quarantined it on sight.
The file getting flagged is TS4_Launcher_x64.exe, sitting in the Game/Bin folder of every install, Steam and EA app alike. Defender hit it with a Phonzy detection, one of those generic machine learning verdicts it throws when a file looks off. Nothing was actually infected. Nobody's Sim was quietly mining crypto.
The launcher lost its digital signature. That signature is how Windows confirms a file really came from the company it claims to come from, and the EA Launcher update that rode along with the July 21 patch went out without a valid one. Players checked the file properties and found the signature tab simply missing. An unsigned executable that changed on disk overnight, in a game that phones home? Defender's heuristics did exactly what they're built to do. They were just wrong about this one.
Plenty of people then did the thing you should never do and switched off Smart App Control or Defender entirely just to reach their save. Others added the exe to their antivirus exclusions, which was the saner move. Either way, a lot of evening Sims sessions turned into troubleshooting sessions.
On July 23 EA started rolling out a Windows only update that re-signs the launcher. The Sims Team's wording: it's targeted, it resolves the digital signature issue that was preventing the game from launching, and it updates the launcher only. Your game version stays exactly where the July 21 patch left it, and your mods and CC are completely unaffected. With auto updates on in the EA app it lands by itself.
One gotcha. If Defender already dropped the old launcher into quarantine, restore it or verify your game files after updating, otherwise you'll keep getting warned about a file that isn't there anymore.
Credit where it's due, EA turned this around in about a day, which is faster than most publishers manage for a "your game is a virus" bug. Still an awkward look for a patch whose headline feature was making sure you never lose progress.
Did Defender eat your launcher too, or did you sail through untouched? Drop it in the comments.
