About Voltage

Voltage - about the game

Voltage is a retro-inspired first-person action adventure game for PC that blends 1990s Amiga and PC aesthetics with modern mechanics. Set in the 1980s small town of Frontier, Missouri, the story follows teenager Mark who discovers prototype VR glasses and a floppy disk in a scrap yard truck. These items connect his Amiga 500 to a parallel virtual universe called AOSYS, where computer development followed a different path and Amiga systems dominate. The narrative pulls Mark into an interconnected digital world threatened by forces from another dimension.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on exploration, light puzzle solving, and combat across interconnected environments. Players navigate levels by activating switches, pushing movable objects, swimming through water sections, and carrying items to progress. Combat mixes ranged firearms with melee tools, requiring players to manage resources while facing waves of enemies introduced by opposing technology interests. The visual style mimics AAA Amiga titles from the era but incorporates features unavailable on original hardware, such as fluid movement and expanded interaction options. A tutorial zone helps newcomers learn box pushing and switch mechanics before the main experience begins.

Game Modes

Voltage structures its single-player campaign around eight distinct sublevels in Episode 1. The optional Tutorial Zone teaches basic interactions. Warm-up serves as an introductory challenge. Hometown expands the starting area with additional houses and secrets after locating the Amiga 500. Dark Side acts as a mystic spawn zone for system maintenance where players must find an exit. Star Qruiser places the action aboard a large spaceship filled with threats during an escape sequence that lasts roughly 100 to 130 minutes. Terraria involves a food production and animal farming facility aboard another vessel. Into the Desert follows an emergency shuttle landing in harsh terrain. BunkerWay leads through underground passages toward the next episode. These sublevels form a linear yet explorable progression focused on restoring order to the virtual space.

Story and Setting

The plot draws from 1980s small-town life interrupted by advanced technology. Mark and his friends explore a scrap yard during summer break and uncover equipment from a secretive C-I Advanced Technology Department with military ties. The glasses unlock hidden Amiga 500 capabilities, transporting the player into AOSYS, a vast virtual realm. Opposing forces notice the dimensional intrusion and deploy enemies to retrieve the device. The setting contrasts idyllic forests and lakes with futuristic spaceship interiors, deserts, and bunkers. All characters and locations remain fictional, with no real-world parallels intended.

Features and Weapons

Episode 1 supports a range of interactions including diving, object manipulation, and text-based conversations with non-player characters. Weapon options include the Shotgun, Sniper M700, Magnum 357, Colt 1911, RPG, Crossbow, Dagger, Hatchet, Bow, Halberd, Mace, throwable Stones, Grenades, and a futuretek gun. Melee choices cover Baseball Bat, Bow Saw, Cleaver, Cricket Bat, Crowbar, File, Garden Fork, Hammer, Lead Pipe, Pickaxe, Screwdriver, Shovel, Sledgehammer, Spanner, and Wrench. These tools fit the retro theme while enabling varied approaches to encounters and puzzles.

Is It Worth Playing?

Voltage delivers several hours of gameplay through its eight sublevels and emphasis on exploration in a retro aesthetic. The game provides clear value for players interested in 1990s-inspired first-person experiences with puzzle and combat elements. Its niche appeal suits fans of titles like Redneck Rampage, Duke Nukem, Quake, Dino Crisis, or Dinosaur Hunter who appreciate the Amiga visual direction combined with modern conveniences. Episode 1 stands complete, with further content available separately. Those seeking straightforward single-player progression in a distinctive low-fi style will find it matches that description without unnecessary complexity.
