About Unclean Hands

Unclean Hands - about the game

Unclean Hands is a strategy, indie, and adventure game for PC that blends the classic Russian card game Durak with a PS1-style horror atmosphere. Players sit across from cheating Slavic spirits in a dimly lit bathhouse after midnight, where thick steam and a single candle set the scene for tense rounds of deception and detection. The core loop revolves around standard Durak rules using a 36-card deck, in which attackers play cards and defenders must beat them with higher cards of the same suit or trumps, or else pick up the pile. The last player holding cards loses and becomes the fool. Here, however, the spirits cheat with unique tricks, and players can cheat in return during brief windows when the opponent looks away.

Gameplay

The experience centers on spotting lies and executing subtle cheats without getting caught. Each spirit employs a distinct method to gain an edge. The Bannik slips a false card into the beaten pile through the steam. The Kikimora throws a card from her sleeve. Baba Yaga swaps the trump card under the deck while her black cat watches. Spotting the deception triggers a GOTCHA call that forces the spirit to pay with a finger. An incorrect call means the player loses a finger instead. Cheating opportunities appear as a bar runs down over the table. During this window, players can hide a card in the birch broom for later use, throw in a card of the wrong rank, or beat an attack with the wrong card. Holding the button slides the card across the table, but hesitation or detection results in a lost finger. The low-poly models, low-resolution dithered visuals, candlelight, and fog reinforce the unsettling PS1 aesthetic throughout every hand.

Game Modes

Single-player sessions unfold across nights, each consisting of three tables in sequence against the Bannik, the Kikimora, and Baba Yaga. A night lasts roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Between tables, players select one of 16 amulets that provide advantages while the steam closes one wound. Completing a night unlocks the next in a ladder of eight progressively harder nights, each introducing one new rule. The final Devil's Night adds a fourth table where the Devil-banker waits. Multiplayer supports up to four players at the same table through online play. The spirit cheats against everyone simultaneously, and any participant can issue a GOTCHA call on another player, including teammates. This setup turns the table into a mix of cooperation against the house and competition among humans.

Progression and Atmosphere

Advancement follows the eight-night structure, with each step layering additional constraints that demand sharper observation and riskier cheating. The 16 amulets offer variety in how players approach each night, while 16 Steam achievements track specific feats such as successful catches or flawless cheating sequences. The entire presentation stays rooted in Slavic horror motifs, from the spirits' individual personalities to the oppressive steam-filled setting. Sound design and low-fidelity visuals heighten the paranoia of watching for sleight-of-hand moves amid flickering candlelight.

Is It Worth Playing?

Unclean Hands appeals to players who enjoy card games with a strong horror twist and appreciate mechanics that reward both vigilance and calculated risk. The blend of familiar Durak rules with cheating detection and execution creates a distinctive loop that feels tense even in short sessions. Those drawn to indie titles developed by small teams will find the hand-crafted art, models, and audio created without generative tools add to its unique identity. The single-player ladder provides a structured challenge that escalates naturally, while the online mode introduces social deduction elements when friends join. Availability on PC makes it accessible for anyone seeking a compact yet atmospheric strategy experience centered on deception rather than traditional combat or exploration. If the combination of classic card play, supernatural opponents, and retro horror visuals matches personal tastes, the game delivers focused sessions that emphasize skill in reading opponents and timing moves.
