The Unwritten: Shadows of Iga is a single-player RPG set during Japan's Sengoku period. Players follow Kirimaru, a young Iga shinobi, through key historical events from the province's fall in 1579 to the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. The story unfolds from the perspective of those who operated outside official records, with the protagonist and his companions Onitetsu and Kaede influencing outcomes without leaving a trace in history books.
Gameplay
Core gameplay centers on large-scale battles where each general leads thousands of troops. Troop count serves as both health and offensive power for units, so losses directly weaken attacks over time. Players manage formations and tactics that include fire, thunder, smoke, healing, and volley fire options. A chosen tactician directs these elements, with switches between defensive setups and aggressive charges available during combat.
Reserve members attach to leaders as vassals. Strong pairings boost unit performance, while certain combinations reveal specialized battle styles. The game features ten chapters spanning the era, incorporating moments beyond open-field fights such as directing fronts at Sekigahara, convincing allies to switch sides, nighttime searches for concealed threats, and direct use of matchlock firearms for precision shots.
Legendary figures appear as allies, including Hattori Hanzo, Honda Tadakatsu, Ii Naomasa, Date Masamune, Fuma Kotaro, Miyamoto Musashi, and Ishikawa Goemon. The presentation uses authentic 8-bit visuals at 256x240 resolution paired with an original chiptune soundtrack. Full controller support, Japanese and English text, and Steam Cloud saves complete the technical package.
Game Modes
The experience runs as a continuous single-player campaign divided into ten chapters. These chapters follow the historical timeline through the eyes of the shinobi protagonists, blending narrative progression with tactical army battles and interspersed non-combat objectives. No separate multiplayer or competitive modes exist.
Historical Setting and Narrative
The setting draws directly from documented Sengoku events, reimagined through the actions of unnamed operatives. Kirimaru survives the initial Iga conflict and becomes involved in pivotal moments including the Honnoji Incident, the flight across Iga province, Komaki-Nagakute, the fall of Odawara, the siege of Fushimi Castle, and the decisive clash at Sekigahara. Success in battles alters the course of these events while the protagonists remain invisible to later historians.
Is It Worth Playing?
The game remains unreleased with a planned launch date of January 14, 2027, so no player reviews or aggregated scores are available. Its appeal rests on the described systems for army-scale tactics, vassal pairings, and integration of historical battles with stealth and ranged elements. Fans of retro pixel-art RPGs that emphasize strategic unit management over individual heroics may find the combination of formation switching, hidden battle styles, and period-specific objectives engaging. Those seeking modern graphics or multiplayer components should look elsewhere, as the title prioritizes its 8-bit aesthetic and focused single-player campaign. Availability will be limited to PC at launch.
