About Starbreaker

Starbreaker - about the game

Starbreaker is an open-world space mining and combat sandbox set in a procedurally generated galaxy. Players take control of a ship to prospect asteroid fields, extract resources, engage in ship-to-ship combat, and expand their operations across persistent star systems on PC.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on flying into asteroid belts around planets and stars, scanning for ore veins, and using a mining laser to extract materials from fully voxel-based rocks. Asteroids deform visibly as players carve out deposits of iron, copper, titanium, platinum, and rarer types such as Vyrexium. Once collected, cargo is sold at stations to fund ship upgrades before returning to denser fields with higher rewards and greater risks.

Combat integrates directly into the prospecting cycle. Pirates patrol profitable sectors, and players switch between plasma bolts, heavy cannons, missiles, and decoys during encounters. An overdrive mode provides a temporary edge in tough fights. Bounty hunting adds another layer, with procedurally generated targets that scale in difficulty and payout. Exploration involves charting new systems, tracking sensor contacts, and investigating derelict ships or supply caches through radio transmissions, all within an infinite, seeded universe where discovery itself generates income.

Modern rendering supports ray-traced lighting, global illumination, reflections, and ambient occlusion, though these remain optional for DirectX 12 performance. Three-dimensional audio powered by Wwise enhances spatial awareness during flight and combat, while a built-in photo mode allows capture of notable finds.

Game Modes

Starbreaker supports single-player sessions alongside online co-op and LAN co-op. Any world can toggle into a multiplayer session with password protection, allowing friends to share the same persistent asteroid fields, coordinate defenses against pirates, and divide profits from mining runs or bounties. Sector danger ratings influence both ore quality and enemy presence, creating natural progression as players push deeper into the galaxy.

Procedural generation ensures each system offers unique layouts of ringed gas giants, moons, and stations. World discovery rewards encourage charting unknowns, while points of interest such as abandoned vessels or hidden caches provide optional objectives. The game does not feature distinct named modes beyond this integrated sandbox experience, where mining, fighting, trading, and exploring occur seamlessly in the same persistent environments.

Progression and Features

Ship customization drives long-term play through upgrades purchased with sold ore. Players balance risk and reward by selecting sectors with appropriate danger levels. Procedural bounties and sector challenges add variety without requiring separate queues. The voxel mining system stands out because every asteroid functions as a real, breakable object with color-coded veins that guide extraction.

Early Access currently includes the full core loop of flying, mining, combat, selling, upgrading, and co-op. Planned expansions such as on-foot astronauts, block-based base building, and expanded planet surfaces remain in development and are not yet available. Controls are fully customizable, and the experience runs on the Vyrex Engine with optional advanced graphics features.

Is It Worth Playing?

Starbreaker suits players who enjoy open-world resource gathering combined with ship combat and procedural exploration in a space setting. The Early Access version delivers a playable foundation of mining, fighting, and co-op prospecting today, with all future updates included at no additional cost. No user reviews exist yet, reflecting the game's pre-release status ahead of its planned Early Access launch.

Those seeking a complete experience with on-foot gameplay or base building should monitor development updates. Players comfortable with shaping an evolving title through feedback will find the current systems rewarding, especially in shared sessions where coordination against pirates and resource sharing add depth. The persistent galaxy and voxel mechanics provide a solid base for repeated sessions focused on fortune-building at the frontier.
