About Sidebar Starship

Sidebar Starship - about the game

Sidebar Starship is an action indie casual game for PC in which a spaceship parks at the edge of the screen, auto-targets enemies, and clears waves while the player works on other tasks. The core loop combines passive progression with direct intervention, letting the ship handle routine combat while the player steps in for movement, dashes, and critical moments.

Gameplay

The ship sits docked at the screen edge and opens fire on approaching threats without constant input. Players control movement using WASD or arrow keys and press space to dash through bullets or escape boss patterns. Stardust collected from defeated enemies funds 49 upgrades spread across Fire, Orbs, Systems, Survival, and Core categories. These upgrades increase damage, shields, pickup range, or enable automation of certain purchases. Eight distinct weapons form the arsenal: Cannon, Plasma Orbs, Escort Drones, Scan Laser, Arc Generator, Missile Bay, Pulse Ring, and Ram Armor. Core keystones can alter how some weapons function, creating varied loadouts without relying on a single oversized gun.

Progress carries forward after every crash. Every ten light-years a boss appears from a set of six: Planetary Fortress, Dreadnought, Hive Queen, Titan Meteor, Prism Sovereign, or Void Monolith. Returning to the latest checkpoint preserves all upgrades, weapon unlocks, and medals. First-time milestones at these distances grant permanent medals that boost main-cannon damage and future stardust income. No prestige system wipes accumulated items.

Game Modes

After the tutorial sector, players select from four sectors that change enemy density, hazards, and rewards. The Asteroid Belt features fewer enemies and no hazards. The Comet Track introduces comet tails that push the ship off course. The Crystal Blight Corridor delivers denser waves and more elite enemies along with richer stardust payouts. The Void Ruins offer more power-ups at the cost of gravity anomalies that pull the ship unpredictably.

Four combat doctrines further shape each run. Cruise provides balanced performance. Firepower trades shields for higher damage output. Bulwark trades damage for improved survival. Salvage trades firepower for increased stardust and pickup range. Players can switch doctrines between sectors to match preferred risk and reward profiles.

Enemies and Progression

Six enemy formations and six elite modifiers ensure waves feel fresh across sessions. A bestiary tracks 41 enemy ships and bosses. Milestones at 8, 16, 26, and 41 entries award permanent bonuses, as does completing each sector's exclusive enemy set. A stats page records deepest distance reached, total kills, highest combos, and 22 in-game achievements. Five ship designs and five engine-and-cannon color themes provide cosmetic variety. After time away, a voyage report distributes any earned stardust while route progress and bosses remain available on return.

Is It Worth Playing?

Sidebar Starship suits players who enjoy a persistent single-player experience that runs alongside other desktop work. The combination of auto-fire combat, upgrade paths that carry across deaths, and sector choices creates steady progression without full resets. Those seeking full-screen twin-stick shooters, roguelike runs with randomized builds each attempt, or completely hands-off automation from the start may find the hybrid control scheme less appealing. The game rewards long-term investment in upgrades and bestiary completion while still requiring player input during intense boss encounters or when hazards appear.
