About Recess of the Dead

Recess of the Dead - about the game

Recess of the Dead is an action indie game set on a single seaside block overrun by zombies. Players navigate a compact neighbourhood filled with houses, shops, a market, a canal, a ferris wheel, a cemetery and a bandstand while managing resources and completing tasks in a persistent environment that reacts to their presence.

Gameplay

The core loop revolves around exploring and surviving on one familiar block where every street and building can be learned by heart. Players start with a basic pistol and use sugar collected from the bake sale as currency to buy ammunition, repairs and additional weapons including a rail gun and a candy-striped bat. A guitar serves as a melee option that plays a chord on impact. The environment stays lively with scattered pigeons, bolting rats, a stray dog and honking traffic that adds to the sense of a living neighbourhood even as zombies shuffle through it.

Day and night cycles alter enemy behaviour and job availability. Random events such as screams on corners, car alarms drawing hordes or neighbours in need of help occur while players focus on other tasks. Vehicles number thirty six in total and include cars, a tow truck, an ambulance, motorbikes, armoured trucks, jet skis, a boat and a school bus. All of them sustain damage with crumpling panels, broken glass and lost wheels. Players can fire the pistol from the driver seat and earn gang cars by winning street races.

Six neighbours each offer three personal jobs. Completing these unlocks permanent benefits like discounted repairs, mechanic services or militia support. The refuge grows with each survivor brought back, unlocking tiers that provide starting resources, extra weapons and a second chance on death.

Game Modes

Four distinct modes shape how players approach the block. Waves mode focuses on holding the area through successive zombie waves with breaks for shopping and restocking. Cruise mode removes some restrictions for a more open experience where death simply returns the player to the refuge without losing progress or items. Escape mode limits players to the pistol only while requiring them to fill a loot bag and deliver it safely, with death resulting in total loss. Shift mode imposes an eight minute timer where every job pays double and the job board stays full.

Fourteen types of work appear on the board between waves. These range from burning out nests and escorting neighbours to driving families to safety, running deliveries, raiding shops, catching supply drops, holding spots under siege and a cemetery job that opens only after dark. Most jobs and all street races award bronze, silver or gold medals. Fourteen enemy types challenge players beyond basic shamblers, including runners, screamers that call others, armoured variants, spitters, crawlers, bursters, chargers and a four metre tall brute. Three unique bosses control specific map corners: the Operator at the ferris wheel, the Champ and the Drowned on the beach.

Progression and Features

The refuge system encourages repeated runs by permanently saving rescued survivors and expanding camp tiers for better starting gear. An optional story unfolds through seven illustrated cards detailing the bake sale incident and the fate of the band, plus six timed cases that investigate who spiked the punch. These elements can be toggled off entirely. Four arcade cabinets offer playable minigames with persistent high scores. Twenty two achievements track progress alongside full gamepad support and extensive accessibility options including a difficulty dial described in words, colour safe mode, HUD scaling and adjustable camera shake.

The game supports English and Brazilian Portuguese. It runs on Windows with modest system requirements and uses a self contained setup without additional runtimes.

Is It Worth Playing?

Recess of the Dead targets players who enjoy focused single player zombie sandboxes with strong emphasis on one interconnected location rather than sprawling maps. The combination of job boards, vehicle handling, neighbour favours and multiple modes provides variety within a tight space. Accessibility features and the option to disable story elements make it approachable for a wide audience. As an upcoming title with no player reviews available yet, its value depends on interest in its specific blend of survival, driving and light management mechanics on a single block. Those drawn to indie action experiences with clear progression and replayable modes will find the most to explore once it launches.
