About Queenright: A Beekeeping Simulator

Queenright: A Beekeeping Simulator - about the game
A hive of your own

Queenright is a gentle beekeeping sim on a hill above a small valley. You start with two hives, Clover and Bramble, and a smoker. You also have Marguerite, who kept bees on this hill for forty years and is handing them to you. She stays on as your mentor. You smoke the entrance, lift the lid and draw out a frame, and thousands of bees go on about their work in your hands. Eggs, larvae, capped brood, pollen, and honey are all there to read. Somewhere among them is the queen.

"Queenright" is the beekeeper's word for a colony with a healthy, laying queen. It's the question every inspection is really asking.

Real beekeeping, taught gently

Everything here follows real practice, simplified but never wrong. Marguerite teaches each thing just when it first matters in your own apiary, in a line or two:

  • reading brood

  • spotting a colony that's planning to swarm

  • finding and marking a queen

  • counting Varroa mites with a sugar roll, which the bees survive

  • choosing a treatment that suits the weather and the season

There's an Almanac on the cabin shelf that fills in as you go. When you're ready to read more, it has the why behind each step.

Up close with the bees

Lean in and the comb is real: bees climb head first into the cells to feed larvae, back in to store nectar, and chew their way out as new adults. The first time something special happens in your apiary, a short close-up shows it the way a beekeeper rarely gets to see it: a waggle dance pointing to the hawthorn, nurses feeding the queen royal jelly, a forager packing pollen on a dandelion, a swarm pouring out to hang in the apple tree. Each one is kept in the Almanac to watch again.

Through the seasons

Spring brings the build-up and the swarm season. In summer the clover flows and the beards hang on hot evenings. Fall turns the maples gold and fills the goldenrod. In winter the hives sit wrapped in tar paper under the snow, and on a mild afternoon a few bees come out on cleansing flights.

Each season looks, sounds and works differently, and so does the weather: rain keeps the foragers home and snow keeps them clustered. Time moves when you do something and when you sleep. It never moves while you stand and look.

The town comes to you

There's no rushing around a town. Your neighbors come up the lane with a reason to visit:

  • Dale brings your catalog orders, a little nervous about the humming box.

  • Toby follows his nose to the honey house and buys your jars for his gran's honey cake.

  • Tom the herbalist wants a pollinator patch and teaches you pollen colors.

  • Dr. Mott from the county extension office runs the bee club, comes when a colony is struggling, and is always glad to hear of a hygienic queen.

Four festivals come round the year, and they wait for you, so you can go whenever you're ready: Spring Planting Day, the Midsummer Honey Fair, Harvest Lantern Night and Winter Candle Eve. Nothing expires, and there are no friendship meters. Friendship shows in what people say and bring.

A growing apiary, with levels of care

Grow from two hives to a dozen through splits, caught swarms and nucs. A dozen hives should never feel like a dozen chores: you can read a hive from outside in a few seconds by watching the entrance or hefting the back to feel the stores. A quick look takes about a minute. Save the full inspection for when something calls for it.

Honey, wax and your own corner of the hill

Take off a super when the frames are capped. Uncap them with a knife and spin them in a hand-crank extractor, then fill one-pound jars through the honey gate, each honey its own color, from pale clover to dark buckwheat. Render the cappings into wax blocks for lanterns and candles, and cut comb honey for Tobias's customers. Sow phacelia, borage and clover in raised beds and watch the pollen come home in their colors. Then make the place yours with a water dish for the bees, a bench by the hives, a sign with your apiary's name and string lights on the porch.

Optional realism

Queenright is cozy by default: no player action kills a bee, and a colony that struggles can always recover. If you'd like the harder truth, two separate toggles are there when you start a new game or later in the settings. Both are off unless you turn them on:

  • Colony loss: a neglected colony can die, and Dr. Mott helps you understand why.

  • Alcohol wash: the standard real-world mite count, which kills the sample.

Features
  • Lift, turn and read real frames of comb with thousands of living bees on them, then find and mark your queen.

  • Real beekeeping, taught just in time: brood, swarming, Varroa, treatments, feeding, splits and queen rearing.

  • Close-up bee moments, from the waggle dance to a new bee chewing out of her cell, collected in the Almanac.

  • Count mites with a sugar roll that the bees survive, and choose a treatment that fits the weather and the season.

  • Four full seasons with their own weather, bloom and light, from spring blossom to snow on the wrapped hives.

  • A small cast who come up the lane to you, with four festivals that wait until you're ready.

  • Harvest and jar your honey, render wax for lanterns and candles, and sell to the bakery at a steady price.

  • Levels of care: read a hive from its entrance in seconds, and open it only when it calls for you.

  • Cozy by default, with optional realism toggles for colony loss and the alcohol wash.

  • Three save slots, gamepad support, and keys you can remap.
