About Obsidian Spire

Obsidian Spire - about the game

Obsidian Spire is a grim text-based RPG and adventure game for PC that places players inside a single persistent campaign through typed commands. The experience blends interactive fiction with core RPG systems, where every action begins with a typed instruction and the game resolves outcomes through dice rolls behind the scenes.

Gameplay

Players begin with a Session 0 character creation process that includes selecting a custom race and class, assigning six ability scores, and choosing two workings. From there the story opens in the village of Elderglen after a harvest bell rings unanswered at three houses. The journey leads north through towns with working mill wheels, into the Darkwood, and eventually to the black tower known as the Spire.

Navigation relies on simple directional commands such as North, South, East, or West. Typing map displays a travel chart, while typing journal opens the character record and typing book reveals the current location description. Inns and shops respond to tavern or shop commands, offering rumors, food, drink, lodging, and later access to a smith, potions, books, and staves once certain story conditions are met. Rest and sleep commands restore the character when used on the road or behind a barred door.

Interaction with NPCs happens through talk commands followed by a name or a custom line of dialogue. The game tracks prior actions, so characters remember what the player has done. Optional voice input is available via the operating system, though the core experience remains fully keyboard driven. The underlying system uses open and shut dice rolls on a d20 for hits and persuasion checks, with saves tied to the six ability scores.

Game Modes

Obsidian Spire contains one continuous campaign that spans Session 0 through the Spire, the Crypt, and the events that follow. The same save file carries forward, preserving the player character and all relationships with named individuals. No separate modes, roguelike runs, or multiplayer options exist. The entire experience runs offline as a scripted module rather than a live system, delivering a fixed narrative path with meaningful branches determined by player choices and dice results.

Story and Setting

The narrative centers on a cursed book that consumed a wizard, leaving him as a purple crystal atop the Spire. A mysterious bruise in the Crypt offers the only way to restore life to Elderglen, yet the player may also choose to wear the bruise or leave it behind. Deeper exploration beneath the First Vault reveals counted brass and other hungers for those who learn the correct paths. The world includes locations such as Wayford, Hollowford, Millpass, and the Darkwood, each tied to burial horror and fused remains that emphasize the grim tone.

Atmosphere draws from burial oaks that punish careless camping and animal sounds that hint at inherited traits. The tone remains adult and unflinching, focused on consequence rather than spectacle.

Is It Worth Playing?

Obsidian Spire suits players who enjoy pure text adventures and interactive fiction with integrated RPG mechanics. The typed-command interface and persistent single-campaign structure reward careful reading and deliberate choices. Those seeking visual spectacle, frequent updates, or multiple distinct modes will find the experience limited by design. Fans of grimdark storytelling, dice-driven resolution, and the freedom to type custom dialogue lines will find a focused, self-contained journey that respects player agency within its scripted boundaries. The offline, DRM-free Windows and Linux builds further support uninterrupted play on capable machines.
