The Ministry is hiring!
There's an empty desk on the second floor, by the kettle. Nobody is quite sure what the job is: the person who knew has left. To apply, it's only the one form. It is quite a long one.
Seven acts of applying for a job
The Application. Forty pages, one field each, no pasting. Every rule is printed on its page. Read carefully.
On Foot. The interview is in person, 42.195 kilometres away. You walk there in real time, by the Pedestrian Code.
The Queue. Take a ticket. Wait for your number. Tell Margaret, at the window, exactly what your application says.
The Interview. Sixteen questions from a panel of two, who agree on everything and ask some things twice.
The Offer. A card from Colin, in Offers, and a second form to accept the job.
The First Day. Your induction, nine items long. Your line manager is a small dog.
The Vacancy. And then, at last, you find out what the job is.
Real waiting
Your application is processed in 3 to 5 business days, in one of six time zones, weekends and public holidays included. Close the game and come back: the Ministry keeps your file. Or press Hurry Them Along, and someone will pop along and ask, very nicely.
Fair, if not kind
The rules are never random. Every rejection names the page with the problem, and only the page. A careful reader passes first time. Most people are not careful readers.
