About Hide & Shriek

Hide & Shriek - about the game

Hide & Shriek is an asymmetric multiplayer horror game set inside a single sprawling asylum where one player hunts while the others attempt to survive and escape. Up to eight participants can join a session on PC, with the core loop revolving around tension, sound cues, and strategic item use rather than direct combat. The experience blends elements of hide-and-seek with resource management and role reversal, creating matches that emphasize careful movement and environmental awareness over fast-paced action.

Gameplay

The asylum features distinct areas such as the reception, day room, cell block, infirmary, surgery, morgue, baths, records, plant room, and yard. One seeker carries a torch that reveals a forward cone of vision blocked by walls and furniture, while the remaining players hide and work toward unlocking the front door. Hiders receive a head start of ten to forty-five seconds before the seeker enters. Movement generates noise that travels through the building, with sprinting alerting others across rooms, walking carrying moderate risk, and crouching remaining nearly silent but limiting speed. Floorboards creak underfoot, and doors produce loud sounds when opened or slammed.

Terminals scattered throughout the building allow hiders to contribute points toward unlocking the exit, with no one informed of the exact progress. Once paid off, a ten-second interaction completes the escape. The seeker can interrupt this process and reset the lock. Additional mechanics include a radio for voice chat that broadcasts loudly to all players when used, directional audio cues, and the ability for hiders to revive fallen teammates. Items number eighty-five in total, including forty-five that aid survival such as quieter boots or healing options, eight that can be placed as hazards for others, and four traps exclusive to the seeker like tripwires or caltrops.

After each round the seeker applies one of twenty-eight curses to a chosen hider, such as louder footsteps or increased visibility, which persist across rounds and stack up to three layers. The shop lets players purchase upgrades in order of current wealth, with each item appearing only once per night. Points earned from survival carry forward, and the seeker role rotates among participants.

Game Modes

Online play supports up to eight players through private rooms or a server browser, with sessions running a variable number of rounds. A full night typically lasts twenty-five to forty minutes depending on settings. Singleplayer mode pits one person against AI seekers on five difficulty levels from TIMID to RELENTLESS, with nine adjustable parameters covering round count, head-start duration, hunt length, movement speeds, and visibility ranges. These settings save between sessions. A guided tutorial introduces core actions like crouching, interacting with terminals, and managing the lock while facing a non-aggressive seeker.

Matches emphasize survival and coordination among hiders or pursuit and positioning for the seeker. Connection drops preserve a player's seat along with coins and inventory upon return.

Progression and Customization

Eleven voiced characters are available, three earned through progression. Sixty-nine deeds track accomplishments such as surviving rounds, catching hiders, reviving teammates, applying curses, and completing a night on the most challenging settings. An in-game encyclopedia reveals details about items only after they have been used against the player. Gamepad and keyboard controls are supported alongside original sound design focused on creaks, footsteps, and radio static.

Is It Worth Playing?

Hide & Shriek suits players who enjoy asymmetric horror experiences that reward patience, sound management, and tactical item placement over reflexes or shooting. The mix of online sessions with friends or strangers and adjustable singleplayer options against bots provides flexibility for different group sizes and skill levels. The detailed asylum layout and layered systems of noise, vision cones, curses, and the shop create repeated sessions with meaningful decisions. Those seeking quick matches or constant action may find the deliberate pacing less engaging, while fans of tense cat-and-mouse gameplay in a confined environment will find consistent depth in the mechanics described.
