About Crawl

Crawl - about the game

Crawl stands out as an action indie RPG dungeon crawler designed around local multiplayer competition on PC. One player takes the role of the hero advancing through procedurally generated levels, while the others act as spirits that possess and direct traps along with a wide range of monsters. The core loop revolves around survival, progression, and sudden role reversals whenever a spirit lands the killing blow on the current hero.

Gameplay

The experience centers on fast-paced combat inside compact dungeon rooms filled with hazards and enemies. The hero dodges attacks, swings weapons, casts spells, and collects loot to gain experience points. Each run lasts around thirty minutes as the hero accumulates power through new equipment and abilities. Spirits float through the environment and seize control of stationary traps or spawn and guide monsters, turning every encounter into a coordinated effort to stop the hero's advance. When the hero falls, the player responsible for the final strike immediately becomes the new hero and continues the crawl with the previous hero's accumulated progress reset for the others.

Progression feels substantial within each session. Heroes unlock access to dozens of weapons, spells, and items that alter combat style and effectiveness. On the opposing side, spirits evolve monsters across more than sixty distinct types, starting with basic vermin and advancing them into formidable demons or undead warriors. This evolution happens between floors and rewards clever positioning and timing. Single-player sessions rely on capable AI that fills the spirit roles with aggressive and adaptive behavior, creating consistent opposition without requiring additional human players.

Controls support multiple input methods including gamepads, keyboard, and mouse, allowing flexible setup for groups gathered around one screen. The pixel-art presentation keeps the action clear even during chaotic moments with multiple entities on screen.

Game Modes

The primary structure supports play with two to four participants in the same room, where participants rotate between hero and spirit duties through the natural flow of deaths. A dedicated single-player option lets one person face off against AI-controlled spirits that manage traps and monsters with notable intelligence. No separate online matchmaking exists, keeping the focus on shared-screen sessions or Steam remote play for distant friends using one copy of the game.

Additional variety comes from unlockable challenges that test mastery of specific mechanics or item combinations. These serve as optional goals rather than separate modes, encouraging repeated runs to discover new strategies and monster evolutions. The randomly generated dungeons ensure each attempt presents fresh layouts of rooms, traps, and enemy placements.

Progression and Monster Evolution

Hero advancement follows classic RPG patterns with experience gained from defeating monsters and navigating floors. Loot drops provide immediate power spikes through better gear, while permanent unlocks across sessions expand the pool of available options. Spirits invest effort into upgrading their controlled creatures, creating a back-and-forth dynamic where stronger monsters demand better hero builds to overcome.

The final confrontation pits the leveled hero against a massive boss whose limbs and attacks the remaining spirits collectively manipulate. Success requires reaching sufficient power before this stage, turning the entire dungeon run into preparation for that shared-control showdown.

Is It Worth Playing?

Player reception remains strongly positive years after release, with recent reviews sitting at very positive levels and the overall rating overwhelmingly positive across thousands of entries. The game delivers consistent entertainment for groups seeking a competitive yet cooperative twist on dungeon crawling, where every death creates immediate tension and laughter. Local multiplayer shines brightest when friends occupy the same space, though AI opponents keep solo runs engaging for practice or quick sessions.

Those who enjoy short, replayable matches with high interaction between participants will find the mechanics rewarding. The absence of ongoing seasonal content or major post-launch expansions means the experience stays focused on its original design, which continues to hold up for couch gatherings or remote play setups. Availability on PC supports easy access for anyone with compatible controllers or input devices.
