About ChessTan

ChessTan - about the game

ChessTan is a strategy game that blends resource management and settlement building with chess-inspired unit movement on a hex grid. Available on PC as a free-to-play title, it supports 2 to 4 players in matches that combine economic decisions with tactical combat until one kingdom's Nexus remains.

Gameplay

Matches unfold across repeated rounds on randomized hex maps. Players begin by placing starting Watchtowers to claim territory. Each round starts with a dice roll that activates resource production on settled tiles, yielding Timber, Stone, Iron, Grain, or Crystal depending on the numbers shown and the hexes controlled.

Resources fund construction during the build phase. Options include additional Watchtowers for expansion, Trails for movement efficiency, Fortress upgrades for defense, and new units. The move phase follows, where units advance across the hex grid using distinct movement patterns modeled on chess pieces, such as orthogonal lines, diagonals, or knight-style jumps. Units capture opponents by landing on their positions, and the objective centers on eliminating rival kingdoms through Nexus capture or army destruction.

Special mechanics add layers to the loop. Landing three kills unlocks the Colossus, a powerful unit immune to capture by basic Militia that can shift momentum in prolonged fights. Resource placement and token values change every session across two map layouts, ensuring varied starting conditions and strategic choices.

Game Modes

The core experience centers on free-for-all matches for 2 to 4 players. Systems for elimination, resource trading, and tiebreakers scale to the full group, with the board expanding for larger player counts to maintain space and balance. Rivals are removed one by one until a single Nexus stands.

Participation options include local hot-seat play on one PC, online sessions with friends through room codes or integrated invite tools, and adjustable AI opponents set to Slow, Normal, or Fast speeds. Any combination of human and computer players works, including solo sessions against bots. An interactive tutorial and in-game compendium support quick onboarding for new players.

Key Mechanics and Units

Unit types carry chess-derived movesets rather than simplified abilities. Militia handle basic orthogonal advances, while Riders, Leapers, and Sentinels introduce varied ranges and capture options suited to the hex layout. Fortifications and trails support positioning and resource flow during the build phase.

The Raider event introduces occasional disruptions that affect the full table, keeping all participants engaged even when not directly threatened. Randomization of resource tiles and number tokens across sessions encourages repeated play without identical setups.

Is It Worth Playing?

ChessTan suits players who enjoy combining economic planning with precise tactical movement in a multiplayer setting. Its round structure of roll, build, and move creates a steady rhythm that rewards both long-term settlement choices and immediate combat decisions. Local and online support, along with scalable AI, makes it accessible for groups or individuals seeking strategy depth without requiring prior mastery of either parent genre.

Because the game remains in pre-release with no user reviews available yet, prospective players can evaluate fit through the described systems and tutorial focus. Those drawn to hex-based strategy, resource dice rolls, and chess-like unit control will find a cohesive loop that emphasizes adaptation over repetition. The free-to-play model and short learning curve further lower barriers for testing the blend of mechanics.
