Coal plants speed up climate change, unhappy people will protest and underpaying critical infrastructure might lead to critical failures. Of course, the choice is yours, will you create a utopia with only the best technologies and happiest people or will you create your own dystopian society?
To keep your citizens happy and satisfied you need to provide the basic amenities like food, water and energy. Depending on how you want to rule your world you can also improve their education and add fun places like parks and playgrounds to make everyday life a little less mundane.
Or just do something else and feel the consequences of dead people stapling on the sides of the roads, citizens rioting or even total annihilation of your city.
Coal plants might be the cheapest option but looking at your island through smog might not be the prettiest. But that won't matter either way if the resulting rising water levels consume your island.
