About Carts & Coins

Carts & Coins - about the game

Carts & Coins is a strategy RPG simulation game set on PC where players take on the role of a merchant hauling goods across a fantasy world. The core experience centers on buying low in towns with surpluses, packing a cart efficiently, traveling dangerous roads, and selling high to diverse customers ranging from townsfolk to elves, dwarves, giants, and monsters.

Gameplay

The gameplay loop revolves around resource management and negotiation in a living world. Players visit settlements with unique gluts and shortages, purchasing crates, sacks, barrels, and bolts of cloth before fitting them into limited wagon space by rotating each item to maximize capacity. Upgrades at stables include additional wagons, horses, mules, or rarer beasts for those who can manage them.

Haggling forms a key mechanic. Customers arrive with specific wants, purses, and temperaments such as shrewd, thrifty, hurried, haughty, or deceptive. Pricing decisions require reading these cues to avoid driving buyers away while maximizing profit. Trading continues past sunset, with memory of prior cheap sources proving valuable for repeat runs.

The world features distinct peoples including Midlanders, Norse, Sahri, Eastern lands residents, elves in tree houses, dwarves in stone halls, gnomes, giants, and dragonborn. Each group has unique building styles, dress, speech, and bargaining habits. Players begin with one of eight origins, some unlocked through play, and learn languages to access new markets.

Procedural generation creates fresh roads, crowns, and towns each run, with regional prosperity causing shanty areas to develop into stone streets or decline during hard times. Vampire castles, crypts, wolf dens, spider nests, orc ruins, and witches' huts appear on the map. Seven monster factions expand, raid, and dispatch leaders along routes. The Blood Tongue allows direct trade with figures like Count Adrian, or players can accept rival contracts to confront such threats.

Travel between towns involves risks from bandits, trolls, and giant spiders. Players hire blades and guild heroes at inns, then engage in turn-based combat on the road using abilities like Cleave and Fireball. Victories add spoils to the cart, while defeats cost portions of the load. Hired help may abandon the group if compensation feels insufficient. Unusual events allow hiring hill giants that consume grain, harnessing wyverns, or racing risen dead toward fallen stars.

Game Modes

Carts & Coins operates as a single-player procedural experience without separate named modes. Every session generates a new world with randomized roads, settlements, and faction activities. Players manage merchant runs through open-ended choices in each town, deciding whether to set up a stall, adjust inventory, rest overnight, or plan the next journey. Success measures simply by turning a consistent profit across multiple hauls while surviving road hazards and adapting to shifting regional demands.

World and Factions

The fantasy setting includes eight playable origins that influence starting advantages and language access. Monster factions operate as dynamic threats that grow over time and interact with the economy through raids or direct trade for those fluent in the Blood Tongue. Different races maintain distinct economies and social structures, rewarding players who invest in learning their tongues and understanding local customs. Procedural elements ensure towns evolve based on prosperity levels, creating varied trading opportunities across runs.

Is It Worth Playing?

Carts & Coins suits players who enjoy deliberate trading simulations blended with light RPG progression and turn-based road encounters. The emphasis on efficient packing, customer psychology, and adapting to procedural changes provides a focused merchant fantasy without extraneous systems. Those drawn to strategy titles that reward observation, planning, and risk management on the road will find the core loop engaging. Availability on PC makes it accessible for those seeking a self-contained trading adventure centered on buy-low sell-high mechanics in a fantasy context.
