About Aftermyth

Aftermyth - about the game

Aftermyth is a turn-based strategy game with RPG elements that places players in command of warlords on a post-apocalyptic Earth. The world went dark one day, and when light returned the cities lay in rubble and machines had failed. Spirits drawn from history and myth now back the surviving factions, turning old legends into active sponsors for new campaigns of conquest.

Gameplay

Players begin by selecting a small faction from one of thirteen regions. The immediate goal is to unify the homeland through a series of battles and diplomatic moves before expanding outward to challenge other unified rivals for control of the entire world. Combat occurs on a 3x3 formation grid where eleven distinct unit types fill specialized roles. Shieldwalls absorb incoming attacks aimed at their row, spears counter cavalry charges, reavers smash through braced defenses, archers mark priority targets, and hexers apply persistent curses. Menders restore troop strength while wardbreakers disrupt enemy abilities. Each faction also fields unique elite units tied to its own court traditions.

Heroes form the core of every army. There are 253 of them, and each leads a unit while drawing sponsorship from a legendary patron such as King Arthur, Hannibal, or Odin. A hero advances along two separate progression tracks. Devotion earned by fighting in the patron's preferred style unlocks skills from that patron's tree. At the same time the hero follows a personal Star Track that builds toward a unique signature ability. Switching a hero to a different patron immediately alters the available skills and changes the unit's battlefield role. Captured enemies can be persuaded to switch banners, allowing their strengths to be added to the player's forces. Every turn limits the number of actions available, so each decision carries weight and often forces difficult trade-offs between offense, defense, and positioning.

Game Modes

The central experience revolves around regional unification followed by global conquest. Players manage faction growth, hero development, and battlefield tactics across multiple territories. Battles emphasize careful formation management and hero positioning rather than large-scale army building. Patron demands and grudges add another layer of strategy, as satisfying or defying a sponsor influences which abilities become available and how units perform. The single-player campaign structure encourages repeated playthroughs by allowing different starting regions and patron choices to produce varied paths to world domination.

Hero and Unit Systems

Hero customization stands out as the most flexible element. The dual-track progression lets players experiment with combinations that blend a patron's thematic style with a hero's personal story. A hero sponsored by Odin might focus on aggressive, honor-bound tactics to gain Devotion while also advancing along a Star Track that culminates in a powerful personal power. Changing patrons mid-campaign resets parts of the build and forces adaptation to new strengths and weaknesses. Unit composition on the 3x3 grid rewards thoughtful placement. Front-row shieldwalls protect vulnerable backline units, while specialized counters like spears and reavers punish specific enemy formations. Support roles such as menders and wardbreakers keep forces operational over longer engagements where attrition becomes a factor.

Is It Worth Playing?

Aftermyth suits players who enjoy deliberate, choice-driven turn-based strategy with strong emphasis on hero progression and mythic flavor. The limited actions per turn create tense decision points where every move matters, and the ability to recruit and convert enemy heroes adds meaningful long-term planning. Those drawn to games that blend grand strategy scope with detailed character customization will find the patron and Star Track systems rewarding. The indie presentation and focused mechanics make it accessible for sessions that still deliver substantial depth across multiple campaigns. If the combination of ruined-world conquest, legendary sponsors, and formation-based combat aligns with your preferences, the game offers a distinctive take on the genre worth exploring.
