About Clash of Crests - The Wild Marches

Clash of Crests - The Wild Marches - about the game

Clash of Crests - The Wild Marches is a single-player strategy experience built on a turn-based medieval hex wargame foundation. Players lead companies through untamed borderlands where paths shift, mills appear without warning, and old roads vanish beneath the greenwood or the high downs. The core loop centers on traveling a map of 52 locations across two realms, gathering rumors at quest-fires, outfitting a company, and resolving objectives that frequently end in combat against named threats.

Gameplay

The campaign unfolds across the Greenwood Door, the High Door, and the Lantern Camp. Each serves as a hub where travelers share tales that become active quests. Movement between the 52 sites triggers camp and road events, five overarching mysteries, and opportunities to swear oaths that unlock 26 hero arcs. Wounds and fatigue persist between fights, forcing careful management of the company's condition.

Outfitting happens at markets, forges, stables, and kennels. Players recruit from 112 units that include Wendol raiders, bear-claw berserkers, horse archers, Pale Court thorn knights and moonbow archers, glamour weavers, the Moondial Keeper, Thornbrood creatures, wolves, bears, boar, and a baby dragon, plus marchmen of the fyrd and various named heroes and sell-swords encountered on the road. Battles occur on freshly generated maps for most encounters, so no two journeys repeat the same terrain layout.

Twenty-seven battles and twenty-two bosses punctuate the journey. Named opponents range from Old Wralg the Bridge-Troll under the mill wheel to the Unquiet Prior of the Chapel in the Oaks, Greyjaw on the drove-road, Ulgrim Elk-Skull of the Wendol, the Barrow King and his levy of the dead, the Mother of Nine in the Drowned Cells, the Tollkeeper Below, the Heartwood King, and the dragon Vermithrax Ashwound. After crowning the three main regions, the stone gate at the forest's heart opens to the Elderwood, adding six further battles against the Silver Threshold, the Wyrdtree, the Pale Court, and the Thornbrood.

Game Modes

The Wild Marches operates as a single-player campaign that requires the base game Clash of Crests. Progress follows a structured travel map rather than free-form exploration. Quests carry explicit goals, and most conclude with a decisive battle. Persistent elements such as hero arcs, oaths, and accumulated weariness create continuity across the entire run.

Seven taverns provide distinct atmospheres and music while turning rumors into concrete clues. Forty camp and road events add variety between major locations. The system emphasizes preparation and consequence: units that survive gain experience through arcs, while losses and injuries affect later fights. No separate skirmish or multiplayer modes are included in this content; all activity stays within the campaign structure.

Exploration and Progression

Travel connects towns, ports, shrines, landmarks, and dungeons across the greenwood, the whale-backed downs, and the under-roads. The map encourages repeated visits because paths change and new events appear. Five mysteries require players to collect clues over multiple journeys, while oaths and hero arcs reward focused playthroughs. Persistent wounds mean that a hard-fought victory can leave the company vulnerable for the next leg of the trip.

Outfitting decisions directly influence battle performance. Markets and specialized vendors allow customization of the company before each major push. The combination of generated battle maps and fixed boss encounters keeps the experience fresh while maintaining narrative anchors through the named threats and regional hubs.

Is It Worth Playing?

Players who enjoy deliberate, phase-structured tactical combat on hex grids will find a focused single-player campaign here. The persistent campaign elements, generated battlefields, and large roster of distinct units support multiple runs as different heroes or with varied oath choices. Ongoing updates to the base game continue to refine battle clarity, graphics options, and scenario organization, indicating active support.

The content suits those who prefer single-player strategy with strong narrative framing over open multiplayer skirmishes. Its modest price point and the availability of a free demo campaign in the base game lower the barrier to trying the style. Those seeking quick matches or large-scale online play should look elsewhere, while fans of hex wargames with campaign continuity and fantasy factions will appreciate the detailed unit roster and boss variety.
