Halo: Campaign Evolved is a first-person shooter that delivers a rebuilt version of the Halo: Combat Evolved campaign alongside fresh additions. Developed for Xbox Series consoles and PC, the title places players in the role of the Master Chief as he navigates the mysterious ringworld known as Halo.
Gameplay
Core combat centers on classic Halo mechanics updated with sharper controls and refined movement. Players engage Covenant forces using an expanded selection of weapons that includes nine additional iconic firearms drawn from later entries in the series. Vehicles play a larger role than in the 2001 original, with the ability to hijack enemy transports and pilot a fully drivable Wraith tank for the first time in this campaign setting.
Optional Skull modifiers alter each mission by randomizing weapons, enemies, or environmental conditions, creating varied challenges and encouraging repeated playthroughs. Three brand-new missions form a standalone operation called Operation: Meteorite that features the Master Chief working with Sergeant Johnson in previously unseen environments and against new enemy types.
Level design has been adjusted for better pacing and wayfinding while preserving the original sense of scale and tension. All missions receive high-definition visuals, updated animations, and a remastered soundtrack paired with rebuilt sound effects.
Game Modes
The experience supports solo play through the full campaign. Console players can join a second player in local split-screen co-op. Online co-op accommodates up to four participants with full crossplay between console and PC along with shared progression across platforms.
These options allow the story to be completed alone or with friends without altering the single-player focus. No separate competitive multiplayer modes are included.
The Story and Setting
After crash-landing on Halo, the Master Chief assists surviving human forces against superior Covenant numbers. Working with the AI Cortana, he uncovers the ring's hidden purpose and races to prevent a galactic catastrophe. The narrative follows the original plot while incorporating the three new missions that expand on early events involving Sergeant Johnson.
Is It Worth Playing?
Halo: Campaign Evolved suits players who want the foundational Halo story presented with current-generation visuals and quality-of-life improvements. The addition of new missions, extra weapons, vehicle hijacking, and Skull modifiers extends replay value beyond a straight remake. Those who enjoyed the 2001 campaign or seek an accessible entry point into the series will find the co-op features and cross-platform support practical for group play. The game launches on July 28, 2026, with early access available to certain pre-order editions starting July 23.
