The popularity ranking comes from Steam data: sales, wishlist counts, and the reviews players left. As of August 2026 the leaders are Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, Chrono Odyssey and THRONE AND LIBERTY. Popularity says more here than anywhere else, because an MMORPG lives on an active server. A game with few players means empty zones, a dead in-game economy and long waits to fill a raid group, however well it reviewed. Before you sink hundreds of hours into an older title, check whether it still has a community.

An MMORPG is a role playing game moved into a persistent world you share with thousands of other people at once. You run a character, gain levels and gear, but the server keeps running whether or not you are logged in, so the economy, raids and guild wars carry on without you. The best known examples are World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Guild Wars 2 and The Elder Scrolls Online. What separates them from ordinary RPGs is that the story is only one of several reasons people stay. From here it is a short step to the wider MMO category, which also covers online shooters and survival games with persistent servers.

Most cost nothing to start. Around two thirds of the entries in this category are free, far more than in any other corner of the catalogue (as of August 2026). The paid ones are expensive by comparison: the median runs about 50% above the site-wide median, and the top quarter costs more than two and a half times that median. Buying rarely closes the subject though. Subscriptions, season passes and expansions are a cost that comes back every month or every year, and no price comparison site can add that up for you.

Keyshops do better here than anywhere else on the site. For 46.1% of paid MMORPGs the cheapest offer comes from a reseller passing on keys rather than from an official store, with a median saving of 70.9%. For comparison, in categories like action or strategy a keyshop wins roughly one time in three. Two things are worth watching: a key can be tied to one region, and with subscription games a code for game time and a key for the game itself are two different products. What matters most is when you join, not what you pay. Servers are busiest right after a major expansion, and that is when it is easiest to find people to play with, sale or no sale. If you would still rather wait, the odds are good: 48.1% of paid titles are discounted, at an average cut of 69%, and 52.9% of those discounts reach 75% or deeper.
