About MaMills

MaMills - about the game

MaMills is an indie spatial board game for PC that reimagines four-in-a-row as a three-dimensional challenge. Players drop colored cylinders onto a 4x4 grid of vertical sticks where gravity causes them to stack, creating a 4x4x4 cube with sixty-four positions and seventy-six possible winning lines that run in every direction through rows, columns, planes, and diagonals.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on selecting a stick and releasing a cylinder that falls into place under simulated gravity. A preview beam and ghost piece indicate the landing spot before the drop commits. Each stick holds up to four cylinders, and victory requires aligning four of your color along any of the seventy-six lines that span the entire cube structure.

Camera movement supports free orbiting around the board or locking a fixed angle for consistent viewing. A single-button hint system highlights active threats by outlining opponent three-in-a-rows and marking the blocking stick. Matches support undoing the most recent move, pausing at any time, and resuming later from the main menu.

Patterned cylinders provide visual distinction through stripes and dots so color is not the sole identifier. Adjustable text sizes, motion reduction, opaque dialog backgrounds, mono audio, and variable drop speeds further tailor the experience. An optional coordinate readout displays the X, Y, Z position of the highlighted stick.

Game Modes

Four distinct ways to play accommodate different preferences. The Machine offers five difficulty tiers ranging from Beginner, which allows space for learning patterns, to Expert, which demands precise play. Hotseat supports two players sharing one device by passing a controller or Steam Deck between turns after entering names.

LAN mode connects two devices on the same network, each displaying its own screen, with one player hosting and the other joining without requiring Steam accounts. Remote Play Together enables internet play with a Steam friend, where the invited participant does not need to own the game.

These options blend single-player practice against artificial intelligence with local and online multiplayer sessions that emphasize direct competition or cooperative learning.

Learning and Customization

A story-driven tutorial introduces rules gradually within an actual board setup, teaching one control at a time before concluding with a visual card of the four winning shapes. Six puzzle challenges follow, each presenting a one-move position that trains recognition of wins and blocks across rows, stacks, and diagonals.

Four color palettes include classic red and blue, violet, a color-blind-safe blue and orange combination, and gold and silver unlocked after defeating Expert. Eight drop sounds range from soft impacts to glass or cherry tones, paired with an optional background track. Two loading screen styles feature a tumbling cube or a windmill with cylinder sails. Full keyboard and gamepad rebinding works across all inputs, with on-screen button prompts that adapt to the current controller.

The game supports English and Hungarian interfaces with no spoken dialogue. It was designed and tested for Steam Deck from the outset, ensuring controller priority, readability at native resolution, and safe suspension of matches. Desktop play functions equally well with keyboard and mouse or any gamepad.

Is It Worth Playing?

MaMills suits players who enjoy strategic board games with spatial depth, relaxed pacing, and flexible multiplayer formats. Its controller-first design and accessibility options make it approachable for newcomers while the Expert AI and puzzle ladder provide ongoing challenge for experienced players. Features such as twenty-one achievements, lifetime statistics, and three leaderboards tracking win streaks, total Machine victories, and fewest moves to beat Expert add measurable goals without altering the core calm experience.

Those seeking a digital version of a traditional spatial four-in-a-row game with modern conveniences like hints, undo, and cross-device play will find consistent value in its focused design. The single purchase includes all content, and the emphasis on comfort during extended sessions supports both short matches and longer tournaments against friends or the Machine.
