Talisman - The Dragon Expansion is a strategy and RPG title for PC that expands the core Talisman experience with dragon lords, new inner regions, and token-driven mechanics. Players navigate a board filled with events, enemies, and encounters while racing to claim the Crown of Command amid rising threats from three powerful Draconic Lords.
Gameplay
The expansion replaces the standard inner region with two new options that players select before starting. The Dragon Realm functions like the normal board but increases difficulty through accumulating dragon scales, forcing characters to move one space at a time according to board directions until they face the Dragon King. The Dragon Tower uses a single spiraling path where movement occurs by drawing from the Dragon King's Deck, granting one space per turn plus extras for each enemy defeated.
Dragon tokens appear at the start of every turn and split into special effects or scales. Special effects include Dragon Strike for extra draws, Dragon Slumber to place sleep tokens on dragons or enemies, and Dragon Rage that forces discards of followers, spells, or objects depending on the current king. Scales attach first to Draconic Lords until one becomes king, then influence combat by boosting attack scores or canceling rage effects when claimed from defeated dragons.
New characters bring distinct abilities. The Dragon Rider adds three to attack rolls against dragons and can capture one as a follower for movement and combat bonuses. The Fire Wizard gains spells and unleashes Pyroblasts that can kill creatures or damage characters based on craft rolls while ignoring dragon breath. The Conjurer starts with a spell and can reposition adventure cards to avoid unwanted dragon encounters. The Dragon Hunter begins with an axe, moves directly to the nearest dragon, and attempts deathblows with double dice. The Minotaur adds movement die results to strength in battle but cannot use armor. The Dragon Priestess starts with two spells, converts cultists into followers, performs rituals with followers, and sacrifices items to pray instead of fighting dragons while remaining immune to dragon rage.
Game Modes
Players choose between the Dragon Realm or Dragon Tower as the inner region before setup. Domain of Dragons draws one Draconic Lord as the fixed king at the start and layers additional dragon cards onto the adventure deck based on enemy types encountered. Challenge for the Crown sends characters to the Dragon Tower upon reaching the center for a final ascent. Confront the Dragon King allows direct strength or craft attacks that continue until one side loses all lives, with stand-offs or defeats triggering life loss and rage effects.
Five alternative endings alter victory conditions, including options where the player with the most Draconic Lord defeat tokens wins after slaying all three lords, each with five lives. The Dragon King itself requires a fate roll at the start of turns once reached, leading to card discards, forced attacks from all players, or personal combat attempts.
New Mechanics and Components
Three Draconic Lords-Varthrax, Grilipus, and Cadorus-each possess unique rage effects and dedicated decks of 56 cards containing events, enemies, strangers, objects, followers, and places. Dragon scales provide combat advantages against matching opponents and protection from rage when held by characters. Sleep tokens and crown tokens track specific states during play. The expansion includes 138 dragon cards, a new inner region board, dragon tokens, and the six new characters.
Preparation matters because characters must encounter nearly every space in the new regions after passing the Portal of Power. Defeating dragon enemies yields scales that strengthen attacks or nullify rage, while the king changes dynamically until a player claims the crown.
Is It Worth Playing?
This expansion suits players who enjoy the base Talisman rules and seek greater challenge through altered movement, token management, and dragon-focused combat. The new characters offer varied strategies, from direct dragon hunting to spell manipulation and ritual support. Setup requires the base game, and the added layers increase session length and tension around the crown confrontation. Those comfortable with longer strategic board games will find the fresh inner regions and scale system rewarding for repeated plays.
