Talisman The Clockwork Kingdom Expansion brings a strategy and RPG focused layer to the digital board game Talisman on PC. Set in an era of invention, the expansion replaces traditional rulers with inventors and merchant lords who drive progress through mechanical towers, flying carriages, and automated systems. Players navigate this changed land by gathering materials, crafting custom gear, and pursuing victory toward the Crown of Command.
Gameplay
The central addition revolves around a new Material Deck and the invention system. Players collect material cards by visiting the traveling merchant Cog, which shifts one space clockwise each round in the outer region and offers one free material on encounter. Additional materials cost one gold each after the first. With three materials in hand, any player can combine them to form a unique invention that functions as new weapons or gear. Materials also drop from certain enemies and adventure cards, expanding options beyond the base game.
Three new characters expand tactical choices. The Artificer starts with two spells and can destroy magic objects to gain additional spells or craft points, while gaining spells on rune spaces when craft allows. The Swindler buys objects from other characters for one gold on the same space, reduces gold costs by one when paying two or more, gains gold instead of encountering residents in city tavern or village spaces, and evades battles for one gold. The Engineer crafts inventions with two materials instead of three, adds three to attack rolls against construct enemies, and can roll a die on invention to add extra text to the resulting card.
Forty one new adventure cards, eight new spells, and thirty new material cards integrate into existing Talisman sessions. Construct enemies appear more frequently and interact with the new crafting and combat rules.
Game Modes
Beyond standard play, the expansion introduces two alternative endings that alter win conditions. Runic Revolution clears the board of adventure cards, returns all construct enemies to the deck, and teleports every character to a fixed space in the outer or middle region. Players cannot leave these spaces. Defeating a construct enemy grants a revolution token instead of a trophy, and the player with the most tokens after ten rounds wins.
Era of Invention requires players to take their invention to the Crown of Command and challenge another character in psychic combat. Victory copies one invention from the winner's inventory in addition to normal rewards and eliminates the loser. The game ends when one player defeats all others through this process.
Invention and Material System
Crafting replaces random item draws with deliberate combinations. Each set of three materials produces a different outcome based on the cards selected, encouraging experimentation across multiple games. Cog's movement creates timing decisions, as players weigh pursuit against other board objectives. Defeating constructs and drawing specific adventure cards provide steady material income that supports repeated invention attempts.
Is It Worth Playing?
The expansion suits players who enjoy strategic layering on the core Talisman experience. It rewards planning around material collection and character abilities while preserving the board game's movement and encounter structure. Those seeking more tactical depth from construct combat and custom item creation will find the additions integrate cleanly without replacing base rules. The two new endings provide distinct session goals that change pacing and player interaction. Availability on PC allows solo or group sessions with the digital implementation handling all card draws and movement.
