About THE LONG FORGETTING

THE LONG FORGETTING - about the game

The Long Forgetting is an action indie precision chase platformer set on PC. Players take control of Moneta, the Kept One, in a world where a wall of black ink called the Forgetting steadily unpaints everything it touches. The core experience revolves around constant forward movement through short, intense runs that demand exact timing and quick decisions.

Gameplay

Each level functions as a 60 to 90 second gauntlet that scrolls left to right. The Forgetting advances from behind at a steady pace, punishing any hesitation or misstep with instant death. Hazards include thornbeds, drowning pits, erupting geysers, crushing columns, and carved stone mouths that fire slow glowing bolts along predictable patterns. Contact with any obstacle ends the attempt immediately, and the level restarts without delay or loading screens.

Progress comes through permanent ability unlocks earned by completing levels. These keys grant new movement options such as double jump, wall dash, a protective dash through danger, and glide for crossing gaps. Later keys introduce stranger powers including a light to push back darkness, the ability to consume bolts, silencing stone mouths, and surviving one lethal hit. Unlocks apply retroactively, opening previously inaccessible routes in earlier levels and encouraging repeated visits to collect hidden memories.

Three hidden memories appear off the main path in every level. Collecting them requires deliberate detours that risk the advancing wall. Gathering enough grants a single-use shield against death, serving as the only form of protection earned through exploration rather than combat.

Visuals use ink-and-gouache washes with glowing flora and submerged ruins. Color drains from the environment as the Forgetting advances. The soundtrack responds dynamically, swelling when the wall closes in and thinning when distance increases, providing audio feedback on remaining margin without requiring a glance backward.

Game Modes

The game operates entirely in singleplayer. Three difficulty settings alter only the wall's speed while leaving level layouts unchanged. On the highest setting the wall maintains pace with maximum sprint speed, turning every error into permanent lost ground. Lower settings grant more patience from the wall, allowing room for recovery.

Records track best times per level and per difficulty. A ghost replay of the player's strongest run appears for direct comparison, creating an ongoing personal challenge even after initial completion. No other modes or variations exist beyond these timed attempts and the core chase structure.

Progression and Exploration

Twelve levels span three distinct regions inside a dying mind. Each region concludes at a sealed door the Forgetting cannot breach. A final confrontation awaits at the origin of the central conflict. Ability keys earned from prior clears reshape every earlier stage, turning linear dashes into layered navigation puzzles that reward backtracking.

Memory collection adds depth without altering the fundamental loop. These optional pickups sit in dangerous side paths and consume precious seconds. Their light provides the game's sole defensive layer, converting greed for secrets into tangible survival tools for later attempts.

Is It Worth Playing?

The Long Forgetting suits players who enjoy precise platforming under pressure and instant-restart loops. A first playthrough lasts roughly two to three hours. Full memory collection and leaderboard pursuit extend that time considerably. Keyboard or Xbox controller support allows immediate pickup with either input method. The experience focuses on mastery of movement and pattern recognition rather than combat or narrative branches. Those drawn to short, replayable challenges with escalating personal bests will find consistent engagement across its compact structure.
