About Stones

Stones - about the game

Stones is an indie casual match-3 puzzle game for PC that focuses on gem swapping with a distinctive visual approach. Each stone on the board uses a fragment shader to render one of six specific cuts plus a prismatic star, complete with individual faceting, refraction, and phase-based shimmering. The core loop revolves around a fixed budget of thirty moves per run, where every swap consumes one move but successful plays can restore them through bonuses for larger matches and extended cascades.

Gameplay

The match-3 mechanics center on swapping adjacent stones to form lines of three or more identical gems. Matches of four produce a line stone that clears an entire row or column, while matches of five create a prismatic stone that removes every stone of one color from the board. Cascades that continue four links deep award additional moves, and the scoring system multiplies rewards based on chain length. If no valid swaps remain, the board automatically reshuffles to keep the run going until the move count reaches zero.

Controls support both mouse and keyboard. Players drag a stone onto a neighbor or use arrow keys to move a focus ring and confirm with the spacebar. The game tracks eleven achievements whose icons share the same shader rendering as the board itself. Steam Cloud saves merge across sessions rather than overwrite, preserving progress from offline or multi-device play. Five languages are supported: English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.

Game Modes

Free runs form the main single-player experience. Each attempt begins with the standard thirty-move limit on a procedurally generated board, and two separate leaderboards track performance: one all-time ranking for these runs and another that resets with each new daily challenge. The daily mode delivers one shared board per day, seeded from the current date so every player worldwide receives identical stones, refills, and cascade opportunities. Only the first committed swap counts toward an attempt, and streaks build from consecutive daily completions while gaps reset the counter. Best streak records persist regardless.

Eight visual finishes alter the board's appearance without changing any mechanics or scoring values. Seven of these looks are unlockable through specific challenges, such as reaching an x8 chain for the Obsidian finish or maintaining daily streaks of seven, thirty, or one hundred days for Aurora, Bullion, and Nacre respectively. Each finish modifies stone tints, panel textures, cell details, background drift, and light interaction on the facets, with some adding material effects like dispersion or iridescence.

Progression and Features

Unlocking finishes provides cosmetic variety while preserving score comparability across all runs. The absence of currency, timers, or limited lives keeps every session focused on puzzle execution rather than resource management. Eleven achievements reward mastery of chains, streaks, and other milestones, with artwork rendered through the same shader system used for the stones themselves. The game maintains a consistent ruleset across all modes so that high scores remain directly comparable.

Is It Worth Playing?

Stones suits players who enjoy pure match-3 puzzles without external pressures or monetization layers. The fixed move economy and cascade recovery system reward precise planning and chain building, while the daily mode adds a shared challenge that encourages consistent play. Leaderboards provide clear goals for competitive runs, and the visual customization through finishes offers long-term appeal for those who value presentation. With no lives or waiting mechanics, sessions remain flexible and self-contained. The game appeals most to fans of deliberate, high-skill puzzle experiences that emphasize mechanics over progression gates.
