About Saltwake

Saltwake - about the game

Saltwake is a single-player action RPG adventure set in a harbor city during the final nights of 1999. Players take on the role of Ines Varga, a rookie harbor police officer who survives a mysterious incident that turns dozens of people into salt. The game unfolds across six nights leading up to the year 2000, blending exploration, real-time combat, and light role-playing elements in a compact, atmospheric package.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on navigating 98 pre-rendered rooms that make up key locations such as a marine museum, fish market, hospital, shipyard, old town, and a tower overlooking the bay. Movement feels free and responsive without tank controls, allowing players to examine the environment closely for clues or tactical advantages. Combat occurs directly within these rooms in real time. A gauge builds as Ines moves, and once full it enables a time-stop ability that reveals a dome of targets within range. Players then select and fire at enemies, with larger creatures featuring destructible parts that eliminate specific attacks when removed.

Equipment plays a major role in customization. There are 49 weapons across seven categories, ranging from pistols to rocket launchers, alongside 39 vests with unique properties. An armorer's bench lets players transfer desirable traits to stronger pieces of gear. Fifteen abilities drawn from the light inside Ines provide options for healing, slowing foes, or purging poison. Boss encounters include environmental elements that can be turned against the enemy when discovered through careful observation. The presentation draws from late 1990s aesthetics, including voiced scenes and CG movies, while supporting full controller input with rebinding options.

Game Modes

The primary experience follows the main story across the six nights in Ostrand. Progression involves leveling Ines up to a maximum of 99, with combat, exploration, and ability use feeding into character growth. Upon completing the campaign, New Game+ unlocks automatically. This mode adds seventy sealed levels beneath the Marine Hall, complete with dedicated bosses and an alternate ending that expands on the original narrative threads.

Accessibility settings allow adjustments to battle speed, encounter rate, text speed, and visual effects such as flashes. An assist mode increases gauge fill rate, reduces damage taken, and ensures escape is always possible, while still registering all endings. Individual PS1-style visual filters like vertex wobble, texture warp, dithering, and stepped animation can be toggled independently. Targets within range receive a shape marker for clearer identification during the time-stop phase.

Story and Atmosphere

The narrative unfolds in a grounded yet unsettling harbor setting on the cusp of the millennium. Ines investigates the source of the salt transformation and the entity that emerged from the deep-sea trench, all while questioning her own survival. Pre-rendered environments and voiced dialogue help convey a sense of place and tension without relying on open-world sprawl. The structure keeps focus tight on the five remaining nights after the initial incident, building toward multiple conclusions through the New Game+ content.

Is It Worth Playing?

Saltwake targets players who appreciate deliberate, room-based action RPGs with tactical combat pauses and equipment experimentation. Its accessibility options and controller support make it approachable for a range of skill levels, while the New Game+ layer provides meaningful replay value through new areas and an additional ending. The game remains in development as a solo project with AI-assisted art, audio, and text elements, and it has not yet released, so player reception data is unavailable. Those drawn to retro-inspired single-player adventures with precise mechanics and a contained story may find its systems rewarding once it launches on PC.
