About No One Came Back

No One Came Back - about the game

No One Came Back is a single-player action strategy indie game in Early Access on PC. Players control a demon lord who lures intruders into a cave system and must ensure none survive to tell the tale. The experience blends preparation phases with direct combat, creating a reverse roguelike loop where the player builds defenses and then fights personally when needed.

Gameplay

The core loop begins with spreading rumors in a nearby village to select the next group of intruders. Each rumor reveals details about the visitors, including their strength and carried items, allowing the player to weigh risks against potential rewards from stronger parties. Once the raid starts, four rooms must be stocked with minions chosen from a pool of 33 types. Budget limits apply per room, and upgrades focus on specific tribes to customize the defensive force over time.

Minions handle most combat automatically, but the player can intervene with mana to summon reinforcements. Eight spells and six trap types provide additional tools, while time slows during card selection to encourage thoughtful decisions. Intruders who reach the final throne room force a direct confrontation where the demon lord moves with WASD, attacks via mouse click, and dodges with the spacebar. Blood collected from fallen foes funds visits from merchants, blacksmiths, and other characters between raids, along with access to nine events and 11 relics that alter runs.

Game Modes

Three main modes structure the experience alongside streamer integration. PLAY mode consists of seven raids, with victory unlocking successive Alert Levels that introduce new handicaps across ten steps. 100 Mode extends the challenge to one hundred raids, where every tenth raid features a champion whose defeat adds that champion to future encounters. Daily Challenge provides a single shared attempt each day tracked on a leaderboard. Streamer Mode links to live chat on supported platforms, letting viewers vote on rumors, rewards, and event choices through numbered inputs.

Progression and Customization

Success across raids builds toward greater challenges while the blood economy and relic system encourage repeated experimentation. Minion tribes receive targeted upgrades that reshape defensive strategies, and the mix of automatic minion behavior with manual spell and trap use keeps each room setup distinct. Events and visitors between raids introduce variables that affect the next preparation phase, rewarding players who adapt their approach based on prior outcomes.

Is It Worth Playing?

The game targets players who enjoy strategic setup combined with occasional direct action in a single-player format. Its Early Access version includes the full core loop of rumor selection, room preparation, and throne room combat, plus the listed modes and features such as saving mid-run and multi-language support. Those drawn to reverse roguelike structures, tower-defense style planning, or roguelike progression with personal combat elements may find the systems engaging. The title remains in active development, with plans for additional content based on player input, making it suitable for those comfortable with an evolving experience rather than a complete release.
