About Holdout!

Holdout! - about the game

Holdout! is an action and massively multiplayer game for PC in which up to four players control robots tasked with surviving waves of insect-like enemies on a hostile planet. The robots themselves carry no weapons, so success depends entirely on constructing and maintaining defensive towers that fire automatically once supplied with ammunition produced on site from raw materials.

Gameplay

Players land on the planet with limited resources and must extract ore, process it through stations such as furnaces and assembly tables, then transport finished rounds and shells to the towers during active attacks. Between waves the team visits a shop to purchase new buildings and upgrades, then returns to the field to place them while the next assault is already underway. Robots can be knocked down by bugs, dropping whatever they carry, which adds urgency to every movement across the map.

Production chains begin simple but grow more involved as upgrades are applied. The furnace can stop wasting ore, the assembly table can begin fabricating ammo independently, and drills can mine without constant attention. Conveyors allow fully automated lines once enough components are unlocked. Different doctrine choices made before each drop dictate the overall style of a run, favoring rapid-fire turrets fed by cartridges or slower but area-affecting cannons and mortars. Challenge cards selected mid-run introduce new enemy types, extra production steps, or altered rules that force adaptation.

Locations range from swamps to snowy mountain passes, with weather and day-night cycles shifting during a single run. Towers themselves branch into specialized forms, including designs with large ammo reserves, machine-gun mounts on their roofs, cluster munitions, or napalm mortars. Stations receive parallel upgrades that reduce manual labor and increase output.

Game Modes

The core experience centers on wave survival in co-op sessions for one to four players. Completing every wave allows extraction from the planet, while choosing to remain longer grants additional experience. Team roles emerge naturally: one player mines ore, another manages the furnace, a third ferries ammunition, and all must still place defenses under fire because there are never enough hands.

Play supports both online matches and local sessions on a single PC, with enemy numbers scaling according to team size. Between runs players return to a spaceship hub where new buildings, doctrines, and difficulty tiers become available through accumulated progress.

Core Mechanics and Progression

Resource loops tie directly into defense. Ore must be gathered, smelted, assembled into ammunition, and delivered before towers run dry. Upgrades alter station behavior so that production continues even when players focus elsewhere. Doctrine selection sets the run's identity from the start, while challenge cards add variety and risk each time they appear. Locations and environmental changes further differentiate runs, ensuring defenses must account for terrain and weather in addition to enemy waves.

Robots remain vulnerable throughout, emphasizing positioning and quick recovery when bugs intervene. The combination of real-time production, placement under pressure, and branching upgrade paths creates runs that differ based on shop offerings, chosen doctrines, and accepted challenges.

Is It Worth Playing?

Holdout! suits players who enjoy cooperative resource management and tower defense under constant time pressure. The emphasis on manual production chains, on-the-fly building, and team coordination rewards groups that communicate and divide tasks efficiently. Single-player runs remain viable because enemy scaling adjusts, though the experience feels most complete with two to four participants sharing the workload.

Progression through the spaceship hub provides long-term goals via new buildings, doctrines, and difficulty options, encouraging repeated drops to experiment with different combinations. Those who prefer relaxed pacing or purely automated defenses may find the constant need to produce and deliver ammunition during attacks too demanding. The game delivers a focused loop of extraction, construction, and survival without extraneous systems, making it a strong match for fans of chaotic co-op tower defense.
