GunBird is a vertical scrolling shooter set in a 19th century Europe where five adventurers pursue fragments of a legendary magic mirror. Players pilot distinctive characters through stages filled with enemy formations and bullet patterns while collecting power-ups to strengthen their shots.
Gameplay
Controls use an 8-way joystick and two buttons. The shot button fires the character's primary weapon and builds power across four stages with each collected item. Holding and releasing the shot button triggers a unique special attack for each pilot. A separate bomb button deploys character-specific bombs that clear the screen or provide defensive coverage. Collision with enemies drops the current shot power level by one and scatters a power-up item that vanishes if it reaches the screen edge. At the lowest power level a collision instead costs a bomb.
Each of the five playable characters brings distinct weapons, specials, and bombs. Marion from England uses wind magic and a broom for flight with a fire rabbit special and wind shaper bomb. Yuan-Nang from China generates clouds for mobility and employs a ruyi staff hell punch special along with a clone assault squad bomb. Ash the German scientist relies on a rocket pack and wave blast special supported by a super science bomb. Valnus the Russian flying robot deploys rocket punch specials and the VALNUS Buster bomb. Tetsu the Japanese carpenter pilots a man-powered helicopter and unleashes dragon rocket barrage specials with a great Edo fire bomb.
Game Modes
The game supports single-player campaigns and two-player simultaneous play with mid-stage join-in allowed. Both modes follow the same core loop of progressing through stages while managing power levels and bomb stocks. The structure includes seven stages total across two loops. The first loop selects the initial three stages randomly from four possible options while later stages follow a fixed order. The second loop increases enemy density and bullet speed for greater challenge.
Story and Setting
The narrative unfolds around the discovery of Atler's Magic Mirror fragments by a French archaeologist. Each adventurer joins the quest for personal reasons ranging from training and curiosity to military orders or a final grand adventure. Marion seeks the mirror under the pretense of wizard training. Yuan-Nang pursues stronger opponents with unclear motives. Ash follows scientific curiosity after completing his rocket pack. Valnus operates under imperial command yet shows emerging self-awareness. Tetsu treats the journey as one last undertaking after decades of solitary travel.
