About Grow Up

Grow Up - about the game

Grow Up is a single-player adventure platformer that places players in control of BUD, a small robot tasked with reassembling the scattered pieces of MOM, the parental spaceship, across a vibrant alien world. The game emphasizes exploration and creative problem-solving through plant-based abilities and movement tools rather than combat or complex narratives. Released on PC as an indie-style title with casual appeal, it builds on climbing and growth mechanics in a colorful, open environment filled with unique flora and floating landmasses.

Gameplay

The core loop revolves around traversing the planet to locate and retrieve MOM's ship parts. BUD starts with basic climbing abilities and gradually unlocks tools that expand movement options. Rolling into ball form allows faster travel across terrain with bounces and boosts, while the power glider enables controlled flight between islands and higher vantage points. These systems encourage players to experiment with momentum and positioning to reach distant areas efficiently.

Plant mechanics form a central system. Scanning various floraforms with the Floradex 3000 records their properties, after which seeds can be planted anywhere to create temporary platforms, launch pads, or floating structures. Different plants offer distinct effects, such as catapulting BUD upward or providing stable surfaces for climbing. Riding giant Starplants adds vertical progression by carrying the robot into the sky. Ability capsules scattered throughout the world grant upgrades like enhanced gliding or jet propulsion, further refined by collecting crystals. The result is a physics-driven sandbox where environmental interaction drives progress.

Game Modes

Grow Up operates exclusively as a single-player experience with no multiplayer components or separate competitive modes. All content unfolds in one continuous open world where the primary objective is part collection. Optional timed challenges appear as side activities, requiring navigation through checkpoint sequences to unlock cosmetic suits that alter BUD's appearance and minor traits. These elements integrate into the main exploration without creating distinct game modes or branching campaigns.

Exploration and Progression

The alien planet serves as the main setting, featuring dense vegetation, floating islands, and varied biomes that reward thorough searching. POD, a companion entity, assists in locating objectives while highlighting the planet's abundant plant life. Progression ties directly to discovery: new plants expand creative options, and collected crystals improve existing abilities. The structure supports free-form wandering, with ship parts acting as milestones that gradually reveal more of the map and its secrets. No procedural generation or seasonal changes alter the fixed world layout.

Is It Worth Playing?

Grow Up delivers a focused exploration experience suited to players who enjoy physics-based platforming and light puzzle elements over action or story depth. Its positive Steam reception, with approximately 92 percent approval from nearly 1,800 reviews, reflects appreciation for the charming mechanics and sense of discovery. The game remains available on PC with no ongoing updates or seasonal content, preserving its original 2016 design as a compact adventure. Those drawn to quirky movement systems and plant-manipulation gameplay will find it rewarding, particularly if they appreciate shorter sessions that emphasize creativity within a self-contained world. Fans of similar climbing or growth-focused titles may find the expanded abilities and larger scale an engaging step forward.
