About For the Common Wealth

For the Common Wealth - about the game

For the Common Wealth is a 2D action and strategy game on PC in which players lead a six-man SASR patrol through an alternate 2028 Australia under sudden internal attack. The title blends direct tactical control with deliberate planning, drawing clear inspiration from classic top-down strategy titles while adding modern stealth and reconnaissance layers.

Gameplay

Control focuses on mouse and keyboard input with optional joypad support. Players issue orders to the named patrol members Sarge, Knox, Slater, Riv, Ferry and the NZSAS secondment Kitten. The squad can split into fireteams so one pair advances while the remainder covers from the tree line. Rules of engagement are set in advance as weapons free or weapons tight, allowing the player to trigger a shift to open combat on command.

Movement commands include hold, advance and regroup. Every operative remains vulnerable, so positioning and timing determine survival more than raw numbers. A recon drone provides a live aerial feed that drifts with wind and altitude changes, complete with sensor grain and signal warnings. This feed reveals patrol routes and sentry positions before any commitment on the ground.

Stealth tools range from suppressed bolt-action rifles that reward steady aiming to thrown sticks, coughs and whistles that lure enemies. Night operations emphasise staying out of light. When stealth breaks, options expand to claymores, timed charges, laser designators for airstrikes and heavier weapons such as light machine guns. The enemy reacts realistically: guards investigate noises, take cover, raise alarms and coordinate with others. Some stand firm while others panic or flee, forcing constant adaptation.

Game Modes

The game operates entirely in single-player. The core experience is a campaign of more than two dozen hand-crafted missions set across recognisable Australian locations including Swan Island, the Yarra Ranges, the Black Spur, Wilson's Promontory, Tullamarine, the Daintree, Northern Territory cattle stations and the Port of Melbourne. Mission types cover night sabotage, hostage rescue, assassination, reconnaissance and camp assaults against superior numbers. Rescued hostages join the patrol and must be escorted safely, adding another layer to extraction planning.

No separate multiplayer or competitive modes exist. All progression and objectives remain tied to the linear yet flexible campaign structure that encourages repeated attempts with different approaches.

Setting and Atmosphere

The story opens on 14 October 2028 with a coordinated strike that destroys Canberra's government seat and disables Australian air and communications assets through EMP devices. The regular army is overrun, leaving Two Patrol, 3 Troop, Special Air Service Regiment as one of the final organised units. Support comes solely from the submarine HMAS Rankin. The unknown enemy is numerous, well-equipped and entrenched, yet the patrol operates with limited resources across bush, high country and coastal terrain.

Hand-crafted levels, real voice acting and background lore create a grounded alternate-history tone. The custom C engine built on SDL3 delivers a 2D presentation that respects classic strategy aesthetics while incorporating detailed enemy AI behaviours such as smoking, whistling, muttering and dozing on watch.

Is It Worth Playing?

For the Common Wealth remains in development and is listed as coming soon on its primary distribution platform, with no user reviews available at present. The single-player campaign emphasises careful reconnaissance, squad coordination and choice between silent elimination or overwhelming force. Players who enjoy deliberate tactical decision-making and classic-inspired squad control will find the systems align closely with those preferences. Those seeking fast-paced action or multiplayer options will encounter a narrower focus. The title's strength lies in its consistent tactical engine and the personal stakes of keeping a small named team intact across varied Australian settings. Availability will determine final accessibility once the release date arrives.
