About Dreadlight

Dreadlight - about the game

Dreadlight is an action indie early access roguelite on PC that blends arena survival with resource management and escalating risk. Players control survivors who must balance light and darkness while fending off waves of enemies in a contained arena. The core loop centers on collecting scrap, managing a growing threat called Dread, and building weapon combinations to reach the end of a 15-wave run.

Gameplay

The lantern serves as the central tool for survival. It provides safety, visibility, and power within its glow, but venturing beyond it allows access to valuable scrap. Remaining in darkness too long causes Dread to rise, which increases enemy danger and alters the arena environment. This mechanic forces constant decisions about when to push for resources and when to retreat to safety.

Weapon builds form the foundation of combat. Up to six weapons can be equipped at once, with options spanning orbiting blades, traps, projectiles, close-range tools, and cursed effects. These combine into varied playstyles that adapt to different threats across a run. Relics add further layers by altering how weapons function or granting new abilities.

Persistent ritual scars appear on the floor as Dread climbs. These living wounds remain between waves, grow more hazardous if left alone, and damage anyone who crosses them. Players can spend scrap to seal the most threatening scars or conserve resources to handle the evolving battlefield directly.

Game Modes

The primary experience consists of 15-wave runs that culminate in a final boss encounter. Each run escalates in difficulty through 11 Curse levels that modify enemy behavior and arena conditions. Survivors start with distinct identities that influence early options, while the Black Market provides opportunities to spend scrap on new weapons, relics, and upgrades between waves.

No additional named modes appear in the current scope. The focus remains on surviving the full wave sequence or attempting another run after failure. Keyboard, mouse, and controller support allow flexible input during these sessions.

Build Variety and Progression

With 36 weapons across multiple attack styles and 174 relics available in Early Access, combinations create distinct approaches to each run. Some setups emphasize area control through traps and orbiting blades, while others prioritize direct damage or status effects. The 18 survivors each bring unique starting traits that shape initial strategies before the first wave begins.

Scrap management ties directly into long-term decisions. Investing in seals for ritual scars reduces immediate hazards but limits purchases at the Black Market. Ignoring scars preserves resources for stronger weapons or relics, creating tension between short-term safety and overall power.

Is It Worth Playing?

Dreadlight suits players who enjoy roguelite runs with high-stakes resource choices and arena combat that evolves over a fixed wave structure. The lantern and Dread system adds a unique risk-reward layer not found in standard horde survivors, while the scar mechanics encourage adaptive positioning. Early Access currently includes the full 15-wave format with bosses, multiple survivors, extensive weapon and relic options, and Curse progression for replayability.

Those seeking polished single-player survival experiences with clear buildcrafting depth will find the verified systems rewarding. The game remains in active development, so expectations should align with ongoing scope expansion rather than a complete release. Controller and keyboard support broadens accessibility for different play preferences.
