About Day 31

Day 31 - about the game

Day 31 is an action indie early access title built around wave-based survival horror on PC. Players navigate the decaying halls of St. Harrow hospital while managing a spreading curse that threatens to turn them into something else entirely. The experience blends relentless enemy waves with resource management and a tense economy that rewards aggressive play.

Gameplay

Every session begins with an infection countdown already active. The mark in the blood advances through stages unless countered by earning nerve through combat and kills. Standing still or hesitating drains nerve faster, pushing the player closer to transformation. Two guns can be carried at once, forcing choices about which weapons to keep when acquiring new ones from the merchant. Melee options like a spiked bat add variety during close encounters, and dismemberment effects emphasize the physical brutality of fights.

Between waves the player visits Vessel, who trades suppressants, ammunition, and unusual weapons in exchange for nerve. Mara sits nearby, observing every transaction without speaking. Power restoration opens paths deeper into the facility, including a flooded basement section filled with mutated threats. The core loop centers on pushing back the infection through kill streaks while surviving successive enemy assaults in connected hospital areas.

Game Modes

The primary mode runs the full infection countdown across four stages, turning each attempt into a personal race against the clock. Two distinct ways to end a run exist: bleeding out from damage or succumbing to the curse and turning. Horde Mode removes the countdown entirely, leaving only endless waves of the dead for players who prefer pure combat endurance without the time pressure.

Four difficulty presets adjust the overall challenge. Enemy types include shambling dead, hazmat crews, basement mutations, and a nurse variant. The two connected map sections ground floor of St. Harrow and the flooded basement beneath it form the current playable space, linked by an elevator after power is restored.

Core Systems and Atmosphere

Nerve serves as the sole currency, generated through aggressive fighting and spent on upgrades or time extensions at the merchant stall. The horror tone relies on building dread rather than sudden shocks, with the hospital setting and basement depths creating a confined, oppressive environment. Physical gunplay and gore effects reinforce the sense of fighting against inevitable decay.

Current content includes the complete core loop of waves, infection progression, nerve economy, and merchant interactions. Multiple enemy varieties and the two-gun limit shape tactical decisions during each wave. Audio remains partially placeholder in places, and survivor voice lines are not yet recorded.

Current State and Planned Additions

The game is stable and playable in its early access form, with the full core experience available now. Runs currently conclude after draining the flooded junction, leaving the story open without a conclusion. The second floor of the hospital has not been built yet. Later infection stages feature some visual effects without full mechanical changes.

Future updates aim to add a real ending, the second floor, Steam achievements, workshop support, more enemies and weapons, and a complete audio pass. Balance adjustments will continue based on player feedback during this phase.

Is It Worth Playing?

Day 31 suits players who enjoy wave survival combined with a personal countdown mechanic and a focused economy system. The current build delivers a complete loop of combat, resource decisions, and merchant trading across two map areas and two modes. Those seeking a finished narrative or additional floors should wait for further development. The early access version provides a solid foundation for fans of horror-tinged action who appreciate the tension of managing both external threats and an internal curse.
