About Cold War

Cold War - about the game

Cold War is a single player action stealth game for PC in which players take on the role of freelance journalist Matt Carter. The story begins with Carter arriving in Moscow for what should have been a straightforward assignment, only to find himself imprisoned by the KGB and drawn into a larger conspiracy aimed at controlling the Soviet Union. Escaping requires the use of recovered weapons, improvised gadgets, and careful navigation through authentic Soviet era locations such as Lenin's Mausoleum, Chernobyl, the Kremlin, and the KGB's Lubyanka prison.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on infiltration and survival behind the Iron Curtain. Players move through detailed environments while avoiding or confronting Soviet forces. A signature tool is the X-ray camera, which allows spying on enemies through walls and supports precise targeting or planning. Gadgets are created by combining everyday objects found in the world, turning items like screws or rags into functional tools or traps. Objectives can be approached through direct confrontation or quieter methods, with the environment offering multiple paths and opportunities to combine elements creatively. The world supports non-linear progression, encouraging exploration of hidden routes and alternative solutions to reach goals without alerting guards.

Game Modes

Cold War operates entirely as a single player experience focused on mission based progression. Each mission presents open ended objectives that support both stealth approaches and more aggressive tactics. There are no separate multiplayer modes or competitive elements. The emphasis remains on completing the campaign through varied strategies within the same connected levels, adapting to the situation with available weapons and improvised equipment.

Story and Setting

The narrative follows Carter's desperate efforts to uncover the conspiracy while evading capture. Twelve hours after his arrival in Moscow he loses everything and must rely on scavenged resources to stay alive. The setting recreates real Soviet landmarks with attention to period detail, placing players in tense situations inside political prisons, restricted facilities, and iconic public sites. The story drives the action without branching narratives, keeping the focus on survival and discovery across the campaign.

Is It Worth Playing?

Cold War appeals to players who enjoy older style stealth action games that reward planning, improvisation, and multiple solutions to the same problems. Its mix of gadget crafting, environmental interaction, and choice between quiet elimination or direct force gives it a distinct feel compared to more linear titles. The game runs on modern PCs through its Steam release and offers a complete single player campaign without ongoing updates or additional content. Those seeking a focused espionage experience with creative problem solving will find the mechanics hold up for short sessions or a full playthrough, while players preferring large scale multiplayer or frequent new seasons may look elsewhere.
