About Chroma Keyboard

Chroma Keyboard - about the game

Chroma Keyboard is an indie casual rhythm game for PC that centers on a falling note system built around the twelve tones of the chromatic scale mapped to four keys. Each note carries its own distinct color, allowing players to read the visual cue first before processing the musical interval. The game features eighty original pieces of music, including forty individual tracks and four ten act suites, all composed specifically for this control scheme and performed with custom synthesizers tailored to each piece.

Gameplay

The core loop involves pressing one of four keys in time with descending colored notes that align on a judgment line. The mapping stays fixed across every track, with the color on screen indicating which of the three notes assigned to that key is required. Stepwise motion in a scale therefore crosses between keys, giving each interval a physical shape under the fingers rather than a simple left to right sequence. Timing windows appear on screen during play, showing an eighty millisecond window for a Perfect rating and a one hundred sixty millisecond window for a Good rating. Misses register visibly but do not end the song or reduce any health value.

Rebindable keys and an audio offset calibration tool let players adjust the experience to their hardware and preference. The tutorial pauses on the first four notes and waits for input, removing any pressure during the initial learning phase. Windowed or fullscreen display options are available, and the entire interface supports thirty one languages from the outset.

Game Modes

Players can approach any track in one of three difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, or Hard. Sixteen tracks sit at Hard, twelve at Normal, and twelve at Easy, with each geographic or stylistic region on the map containing both gentler and more demanding options. A dedicated listening mode removes the note chart entirely so the music can play without any input required.

The four Epics function as extended continuous runs. Each Epic consists of ten ninety second acts that play back to back without pauses or retries between sections. Judgment covers the full fifteen minutes as a single performance, with motifs that develop across the entire suite. Three of the Epics use an orchestral palette while the fourth relies on a distinct Indian classical instrumentation set.

The Music Library

The track selection appears as a map rather than a conventional genre list. Regions include East Asia, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Celtic, Slavic, Latin America, Classical, Jazz, Dance, Pop, and Electronic. Every piece draws from the instruments, rhythms, and color palettes native to its tradition and was written bar by bar to fit the four key layout. Examples range from Javanese gamelan textures and West African kora patterns to Korean sanjo, Arabic longa, Bulgarian horo, Andean huayno, and Western forms such as fugues, waltzes, bebop heads, and techno sequences. No loops or external sample libraries appear in any track.

Is It Worth Playing?

Chroma Keyboard suits players who enjoy rhythm games that prioritize musical exploration and relaxed precision over strict failure states. The wide timing windows and absence of any run ending penalty make it accessible for extended sessions or casual listening while still offering clear targets for full combos, rainbow stars, and flawless Epic runs. Thirty achievements track progress from the initial tutorial through complete mastery of every chart. The game remains in its original state with no additional seasons or major updates required, delivering the full library of eighty pieces immediately upon launch. Those drawn to original world music arranged for a compact control scheme will find the experience consistent and self contained.
