About CatchTail

CatchTail - about the game

CatchTail is an indie casual puzzle game for PC in which players guide a snake across grid-based maps to form a complete loop by returning to the starting point and swallowing its own tail. The core challenge lies in navigating without striking a dead end or crossing over the snake's body at any point. This ouroboros-inspired mechanic turns each stage into a spatial reasoning exercise that rewards careful path planning over speed or reflexes.

Gameplay

The experience centers on moving the snake tile by tile across square grids of increasing size. Early stages use compact 5x5 layouts that introduce basic movement rules, while later ones expand to 10x10 and then 15x15 grids packed with interactive elements. Portals allow instant relocation between distant points, crocodiles and tomatoes act as obstacles or hazards that must be avoided or incorporated into the route, and cages restrict movement options until the snake finds a way around or through them. Success requires tracing a single continuous path that closes the loop exactly where it began. Unlimited undo and restart options let players experiment freely, while a hint system progressively narrows down viable routes without solving the puzzle outright. No timers or action requirements appear, so the focus stays on deliberate, thoughtful navigation across all 100 handcrafted maps.

Game Modes

Play proceeds through a linear sequence of single-player puzzle maps arranged by difficulty. The first sixteen maps occupy 5x5 grids and establish core loop-closing techniques. Twenty-four maps follow on 10x10 grids that layer in the first special elements such as portals. The remaining sixty maps occupy 15x15 grids and combine multiple mechanics at once for the greatest complexity. Progression feels steady because each new map builds directly on skills learned earlier, with world map illustrations and custom art providing visual variety between stages. Snake customization options for eyes, mouth, face details, and accessories serve as optional flair that does not alter the puzzle rules themselves.

Progression and Features

Maps grow noticeably harder as players advance, introducing combinations of portals, crocodiles, tomatoes, and cages that demand more intricate routing solutions. The steady increase in grid size and element density creates a natural sense of mastery without sudden spikes. Additional quality-of-life systems include full interface localization for broader accessibility and Steam achievements that track completion milestones across the full set of maps. Because every stage is handcrafted rather than procedurally generated, each one presents a unique layout that encourages repeated attempts until the perfect loop emerges.

Is It Worth Playing?

CatchTail suits players who enjoy relaxed, logic-focused puzzle games that emphasize spatial planning and trial-and-error refinement over quick reflexes or competitive pressure. The absence of time limits and the presence of generous undo, restart, and hint tools make it approachable for newcomers to the genre while still offering depth for experienced puzzle solvers. With one hundred distinct maps that scale in challenge across three grid sizes and a steady introduction of new mechanics, the game provides substantial content for those who appreciate methodical progression. Its casual indie style and lack of multiplayer elements keep the experience focused on personal problem-solving, making it a strong fit for short or extended sessions whenever a clear, satisfying loop-closing moment is desired.
