About Boothill

Boothill - about the game

Boothill is a top-down twin-stick survivors-roguelite that blends action and RPG elements on PC. Players take on the role of outlaws in a frontier gone wrong, facing waves of enemies including risen dead and other threats while racing against the clock until sundown.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on fast-paced runs where survival depends on managing a bounty system tied directly to collected gold. Grabbing more loot increases the Wanted meter, which scales enemy difficulty, introduces tougher variants, and boosts loot multipliers up to three times the base amount. Players can choose restraint for easier survival or push for greater rewards at higher risk.

Builds form quickly during each run through selections of two weapons and two charms from a pool that includes six-shooters, rifles, shotguns, bows, throwing knives, a whirling axe, hexbolts, frost effects, and fire trails. Over twenty charms further customize these setups, creating varied combinations that change how each attempt plays out. Leveling happens rapidly to support this drafting process.

Sixteen distinct outlaws serve as starting characters, each offering a unique kit, playstyle, and backstory that influences early runs. Reputation earned across attempts unlocks permanent upgrades and additional operators through a store system.

Game Modes

Boothill focuses on single-player roguelite runs that emphasize short, replayable sessions. Each attempt builds toward a final duel against a named boss, with the option to trigger these encounters early once a puzzle is solved. This choice pits a complete boss against an unfinished build for those seeking extra challenge.

The structure supports repeated playthroughs through the bounty-driven escalation and build variety, with full controller support including rumble alongside keyboard and mouse controls. Accessibility toggles for reduced flashing and vibration are available, and the game supports twenty-six languages with full interface and subtitles.

Key Mechanics

The Wanted meter stands out as the central risk-reward feature, where loot directly influences enemy aggression and rewards without external difficulty settings. Boss encounters are hand-crafted duels set in varied stages such as open boot hills, catacombs, and high-noon ghost towns, each designed around specific positioning or timing challenges rather than simple health pools.

Weapon and charm synergies encourage experimentation across runs, with no two sessions guaranteed to feel identical due to the depth of available options. Permanent progression through reputation adds long-term goals between individual attempts.

Is It Worth Playing?

Boothill suits players who enjoy survivors-style roguelites with strong emphasis on personal risk management and quick build experimentation. The bounty system provides a direct, player-controlled way to adjust intensity that sets it apart from typical scaling mechanics.

Those drawn to short sessions with high replay value and hand-designed boss fights will find the described loop engaging, especially if they appreciate western-themed action combined with RPG progression elements. The game remains in a pre-release state with no public player data available yet, so interest should align closely with the outlined systems of loot-driven difficulty and on-the-fly customization.
