About Backrooms: Overstay

Backrooms: Overstay - about the game

Backrooms: Overstay is a co-op survival horror game set in an endless, procedurally generated version of the Backrooms. Players explore, scavenge, and attempt to survive either alone or alongside up to seven others while searching for an exit from the looping yellow halls of Level 0.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on navigation through an infinite maze where every session generates from a unique seed. The environment expands without fixed boundaries or repeated sections, forcing constant movement and awareness. Scavenging yields materials needed for basic survival needs such as hunger, thirst, stamina, warmth, and overall health. Stress levels rise over time and trigger hallucinations along with misleading audio cues that complicate decision making.

Stealth forms the primary defense against four distinct hunters. Each hunter follows unique patrol patterns and possesses exploitable weaknesses, such as avoiding light, minimizing sound, or breaking line of sight. Weapons serve only to stagger threats temporarily, so evasion through hiding or repositioning takes precedence over direct confrontation. Players can gather resources to unlock crafting blueprints, construct and reinforce shelters, place traps, and access a vent network that allows repositioning without detection.

Game Modes

Solo play stands as a complete option for those preferring independent runs. Online co-op supports groups of up to eight participants with positional proximity voice chat that enemies can detect, adding tension to communication. Optional player-versus-player elements allow groups to introduce competitive elements if desired. Difficulty settings include Calm, Normal, and Cruel, each adjusting enemy behavior and resource scarcity. Permadeath remains an optional toggle that removes checkpoints and raises the stakes for longer sessions. The explicit objective requires locating and reaching the exit to escape, rather than endless survival without resolution.

Exploration and Progression

Procedural generation ensures no two runs follow identical layouts, though shared seeds let friends recreate the same map for coordinated attempts. Materials collected during exploration feed into crafting and base-building systems that provide temporary safe zones. The vent network serves as a key mobility tool for breaking pursuit and scouting ahead. Sanity management ties directly into audio and visual distortions, requiring players to balance risk and rest to maintain clarity during extended searches.

Is It Worth Playing?

Backrooms: Overstay suits players drawn to procedural survival horror with strong emphasis on stealth, resource management, and cooperative coordination. The combination of endless generation, distinct enemy behaviors, and buildable shelters creates repeatable tension without relying on scripted sequences. Groups that enjoy proximity
