Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord - War Sails is an action strategy RPG expansion that adds naval warfare to the medieval sandbox experience on Xbox Series and PC. Players take command of ships and fleets while continuing their campaigns of conquest, diplomacy, and character progression in an expanded version of Calradia.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on managing a growing empire through land and sea. Armies and parties now travel across rivers and open water on the campaign map, opening new routes for raids, trade, and reinforcement. Naval movement integrates directly with existing systems for sieges and army logistics.
Sea battles feature ship-to-ship combat governed by wind and water physics. Commanders position vessels to ram hulls, board from multiple angles, or strike with ranged weapons and siege engines mounted on decks. Crews can target oars to cripple mobility, tear sails to reduce speed, or sink opponents outright. Weather shifts during fights add another layer of tactical adjustment.
Fleet building involves acquiring vessels from shipyards tied to local cultures and development levels. Each ship handles differently based on its design, and upgrades include rams, improved sails, cargo holds, and figureheads captured in battle. Ports can be upgraded to support larger or more specialized fleets, while blockades form automatically during sieges of coastal or river settlements when the attacker controls ships.
Game Modes
War Sails expands the base game's sandbox and campaign modes with full naval integration. Players conduct maritime campaigns that combine sea travel, fleet raids on coastal targets, and amphibious landings where warbands disembark from ships into new battle scenes.
A dedicated custom naval battles mode allows direct control of fleet engagements on river, coastal, and open-sea maps. These standalone fights let players test different ship compositions, tactics, and setups without progressing a larger campaign.
New Territories and Factions
The expansion introduces a northern region with islands, fjords, and expanded coastline. This area includes the Nords, a Viking-inspired faction known for seafaring skills and close-quarters combat strength. Players can trade with, recruit from, or wage war against the Nords while exploring the new terrain for resources and settlements.
Naval access changes how existing factions interact as well. Coastal and river settlements become more vulnerable or defensible depending on fleet control, creating fresh strategic priorities across the map.
Is It Worth Playing?
War Sails suits players who already enjoy Bannerlord's blend of large-scale battles, character development, and emergent kingdom management. The naval layer adds meaningful depth to movement, sieges, and combat without requiring a separate experience.
Those seeking pure land-based strategy or faster-paced action may find the slower pace of fleet management less appealing. The expansion launched with a major free update that included broader improvements to diplomacy and other systems, extending support for the base game.
Single-player focus means the content shines most for solo campaign runs that incorporate sea routes and fleet operations alongside traditional conquest. Availability on Xbox Series and PC makes it accessible to the existing player base interested in extending their time in Calradia with new maritime challenges.
