Embersong: History Is Yours - New Blood, Old Empires is a turn-based strategy expansion that adds new civilizations, government systems, and exploration options to the core 4X experience of building empires from early eras into the future.
Gameplay
The expansion introduces eight new civilizations, each with unique abilities, leaders, and Civilization Promises that shape long-term empire development. Players lead Britain, the United States, Brazil, Mali, Switzerland, Transylvania, the Aztecs, or Russia, accessing 16 new units tailored to their strengths. Switzerland emphasizes mountain settlements and mercenary recruitment, while Transylvania focuses on vampire units and crypt structures that allow fallen warriors to return in later conflicts.
Government mechanics expand significantly with 22 research-unlocked forms spanning the Ancient era through the Future. These options present clear benefits and tradeoffs, allowing reform as strategies evolve or reversion to earlier structures when conditions favor them. City management gains depth through governors unlocked via the Writing technology. These local leaders operate under player-set priorities, with controls over focus areas, budgets, and treasury reserves that respect manual directives while handling routine growth in larger empires.
Game Modes
Three new map types alter standard play: Inland Sea creates enclosed water-focused layouts, Great Divide splits continents with natural barriers, and Frontier World places all civilizations on an initial old continent before opening a separate frontier for later settlement. The mythic campaign layer adds encounters with specialized opponents that follow independent research paths, including a direct confrontation with Dracula. Expansion campaigns maintain separate slots and autosaves from the base game, supporting distinct historical paths without overlap.
Core play remains single-player focused on empire expansion, research progression, and victory through domination or other conditions, now layered with the new civilizations and systems for varied starting positions and mid-game adjustments.
Exploration and Challenges
Beyond established borders, the expansion opens new worlds alongside ancient threats. Players chart unfamiliar territories while facing mythic opponents that introduce fresh research and combat dynamics. The addition of separate campaign saves ensures that progress in the expansion content stays distinct, encouraging repeated runs to test different civilization combinations and government reforms against evolving challenges.
Is It Worth Playing?
This expansion suits players who enjoy detailed 4X strategy with emphasis on civilization variety and flexible internal management. The new governments and governor systems provide ongoing decision points during city growth, while the added civilizations and map types support multiple distinct playstyles within the same campaign structure. Those already familiar with the base game will find immediate value in the expanded options for reshaping empires and confronting specialized opponents. Availability on PC makes it accessible for extended sessions focused on strategic depth rather than quick matches.
