Another Eden Begins is a single-player time-travel JRPG that follows Aldo as he journeys across antiquity, the present, and the future to rescue his sister from the Beast King. The game features turn-based command battles built around party composition, skill chaining, and a special Another Force mechanic that unleashes coordinated attacks once the gauge fills. Players recruit companions through dedicated encounter quests and then deepen those relationships via character and kinship quests, all while exploring a story written and directed by Masato Kato with music composed by Yasunori Mitsuda.
Gameplay
Combat centers on strategic command battles where players assemble parties of up to four characters drawn from different eras. Each ally fills one of four core roles: attacker for damage output, defender for protection and aggro, healer for recovery and status removal, or support for buffs, debuffs, and gauge acceleration. Battles reward matching attack types to enemy weaknesses to build the Another Force gauge faster, after which the party can chain skills for uninterrupted damage. Exploration spans three distinct time periods connected by story progression, with opportunities to gather resources for crafting equipment and food that provide temporary advantages. A camp system allows resting and consuming meals for bonuses before key encounters. The main narrative is fully voiced, while additional character stories expand on individual backstories and bonds with the protagonist.
Game Modes
The core experience revolves around the main story, divided into chapters that advance Aldo through time periods and introduce new allies. After completing the primary campaign, New Game+ becomes available, carrying over character levels and equipment while introducing new narrative branches and more than ten possible endings determined by player choices. Character recruitment occurs through encounter quests that unlock at specific story milestones, followed by separate character quests that reveal personal histories and kinship quests that strengthen party relationships. These side stories integrate directly into the single-player campaign without requiring separate modes or online connectivity.
Character Recruitment and DLC Integration
Another Eden Begins supports a base roster of 19 playable characters obtained through story-linked encounter quests. The Character Pack Vol. 3 adds Aoife and Wenefica as new party members. Aoife becomes available after clearing chapter 20 of the main story, while Wenefica unlocks after chapter 12. Completing their respective encounter quests adds them to the roster, after which players can pursue their unique character and kinship quests to learn more about their backgrounds and develop affinities. These additions expand party-building options and provide fresh story content that fits seamlessly into the existing time-travel framework. Note that English voice acting is not provided for the encounter, character, or kinship quests associated with these DLC characters.
Is It Worth Playing?
Another Eden Begins delivers a complete single-player JRPG experience centered on time-travel storytelling, deliberate party management, and replayable New Game+ content with multiple endings. The combat system rewards thoughtful role assignment and timing of Another Force activations, while the quest structure for each companion encourages repeated playthroughs to experience all available stories. Recent player feedback highlights the strength of the narrative and soundtrack alongside the satisfaction of building synergistic teams across eras. The game launched with a demo covering early chapters and remains supported on PC through standard updates. Players who enjoy classic turn-based RPGs with strong emphasis on character development and choice-driven replays will find the core loop engaging, particularly those interested in expanding their roster with additional story-focused companions like those introduced in Character Pack Vol. 3.
