Gothic Remake: System Requirements, Release Date, and Key Details

Gothic stands as a cornerstone of Polish gaming history. Although the 2001 original was developed by the German studio Piranha Bytes, it achieved cult status in Poland. Now, the Mining Valley returns in a fresh remake from Alkimia Interactive, covering all the essential facts about Gothic 1 Remake, including system requirements, release date, and other vital information.

When Will Gothic Remake Launch?

Gothic 1 Remake will launch on June 5, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PC version, built by Alkimia Interactive using Unreal Engine 5, will arrive around the same time. The project has faced multiple delays since its announcement, initially targeted for 2023, then 2024, and later 2025, making this date appear final.

The story behind this remake is compelling on its own. It began with a playable teaser released on Steam in December 2019, as THQ Nordic sought to gauge interest in updating Gothic. The response was clear: the demo saw more than 180,000 downloads in its first week, with the community pushing for a full release. THQ Nordic assigned the work to Barcelona-based Alkimia Interactive, which has been developing the game under the guidance of seasoned producers from headquarters, including Mike Hoge, the original Gothic creator from Piranha Bytes, as a consultant.

The path to release has been challenging. The team had to reconcile the desires of fans nostalgic for the original with the expectations of newcomers unfamiliar with Gothic. Alkimia experienced internal difficulties in 2022, leading to staff changes. Six years after the initial teaser, the results of this effort will finally emerge.

Gothic Remake System Requirements

The official PC requirements have been disclosed. For minimum specs: Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X processor, a graphics card with 8 GB VRAM such as AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070, 16 GB of RAM, 60 GB of storage, and DirectX 12. The operating system must be Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit.

Recommended specs are notably higher: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-7700K processor, a graphics card with 12 GB VRAM like NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, 32 GB of RAM, and 60 GB of storage. DirectX 12 is required.

These figures indicate that Gothic Remake demands significant hardware. Unreal Engine 5 creates stunning environments, but at a cost. The 32 GB RAM in recommendations signals heavy use of system memory, common in open-world titles on UE5. Features like Nanite for geometry and Lumen for global lighting need a robust GPU with ample VRAM.

A card with 8 GB VRAM will run the game, though with reduced settings. The RTX 3060 with 12 GB suits 1080p at high quality. For upgrades, consider the RTX 4060 Ti with 16 GB or RTX 4070 Super. Note that an SSD is necessary, as UE5 asset streaming performs poorly on HDD.

What Is Gothic Remake?

Gothic 1 Remake is a complete overhaul of the iconic RPG from March 2001. The original was made by Piranha Bytes in Essen, Germany, and helped define the European open-world RPG genre. Gothic remains one of the most influential RPGs ever, gaining legendary status in Poland through local reviews and the CD-Action release.

The setting is the Mining Valley, a penal colony surrounded by an inescapable magical Barrier. The Nameless Hero is thrown behind the Barrier by royal guards. Three factions control the Valley: the Old Camp, run by Gomez and his guards, serves as the official authority, trading magical ore for supplies from the kingdom of Myrtana; the New Camp unites those plotting escape and mining ore independently under Lee; and the Brotherhood of the Sleeper is a mystical group following Guru Y'Berion, seeking a spiritual escape from the Barrier.

The narrative follows a journey from obscurity to heroism. Players start as a weak figure without weapons or allies. Each NPC follows their own routine, responds to player actions, and remembers past interactions. Players earn respect, learn combat with swords, bows, or the magic of the Circles (Water, Fire, Air, Earth), and ultimately uncover the dark secret of the Sleeper-a ancient evil trapped beneath the Mining Valley. Despite its basic elements, the story captivated players for over 30 hours and still evokes nostalgia today.

How Does Gothic Remake Differ from the Original?

The most notable update is the visual overhaul. Unreal Engine 5 transforms the original's simple trees and flat textures-powered by Piranha Bytes' Genome Engine-into a lush, detailed Mining Valley with volumetric lighting, realistic foliage via Nanite, and dynamic global illumination through Lumen. Previews show familiar spots like the Old Camp, mines, Swamp, and Raven's Fortress as if they were entirely new.

The combat system has undergone a major update. The original's approach, innovative at the time with its collision-based mechanics, now feels outdated. The remake introduces a more fluid system inspired by Souls-like RPGs, while keeping the weighty and brutal feel that defined Gothic. Players remain vulnerable early on, with even rats and predators posing genuine threats.

Alkimia Interactive has stressed that the core story stays true to the source. The same factions, key characters (Diego, Milten, Lester, Gorn-the Four Chosen), and main plotlines remain. Enhancements include extra side quests, more dialogue, and deeper exploration of existing areas. The developers promise over 50 hours of gameplay, a substantial increase from the original's 30-40 hours.

Movement and exploration have also evolved. New features allow for climbing, vertical traversal, and carrying items. The open world now emphasizes height and invites more thorough investigation, addressing limitations in the original where players couldn't scale certain rocks.

Which Platforms Support Gothic Remake?

Gothic 1 Remake will be available on three platforms: PC (via Steam, with GOG planned), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It is exclusive to current-generation consoles, with no support for PS4 or Xbox One. On PC, expect enhanced graphics options, compatibility with ultra-wide screens (32:9 and 21:9), technologies like DLSS 4 and FSR 4, and mod support, which has long been a staple for the Gothic community through sites like World of Players and Gothic Companion, along with hundreds of mods for the original.

The console versions will include a performance mode (60 fps at lower resolution, upscaling 1440p to 4K) and a quality mode (30 fps at native 4K with ray tracing for shadows and ambient occlusion). This is typical for modern UE5 games. The PS5 and Series X processors can handle UE5 well, but Series S might need adjustments to details and resolution.

For many Polish players, Gothic Remake represents a nostalgic return. Revisiting the Mining Valley and reuniting with characters like Diego, Milten, Gorn, and the rest of the Four Chosen in updated visuals. Those new to the series have a chance to experience one of history's key RPGs, while veterans can anticipate a blend of fond memories and modern enhancements, with appreciation for Alkimia's efforts to maintain the original's essence.
