About Tiny Banners

Tiny Banners - about the game

Tiny Banners is a charming pixel-art strategy game that blends resource management, base building, and real-time combat on procedurally generated islands. Players start with a small group of pawns and must gather wood, gold, and meat while expanding a kingdom, training specialized units, and competing against rival banners until only one remains standing. The game emphasizes personal attachment to individual units that carry forward their names, levels, and traits across tasks and battles.

Gameplay

Matches begin with a handful of pawns on an untouched island. Players direct these units to fell trees, mine gold, hunt or pen animals, and transport resources back to the growing settlement. Pawns gain experience through work and receive random traits that influence their effectiveness, such as improved gold collection or combat quirks. These traits encourage players to track specific units rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Base expansion starts with placing a castle and adding structures like houses for population growth, barracks and archery ranges for military production, churches that support healing roles, and watchtowers that can mount cannons. Excess resources can be traded with a recurring goblin merchant named Thrak for currency. Veterans from resource work advance through training into distinct unit types including knights, lancers, archers, and monks. Each soldier retains its original name, accumulated level, and trait when deployed.

Combat involves setting rally points so armies assemble and march toward objectives. Unit types carry inherent advantages and vulnerabilities against one another, rewarding balanced compositions over single-unit spam. Rival AI kingdoms pursue their own strategies, adapting targets based on previous encounters and prioritizing softer defenses when stronger positions prove costly.

Game Modes

Single-player sessions pit the player against one to three CPU-controlled kingdoms. These opponents feature distinct personalities and can be faced on one of three difficulty settings. Progress saves across five slots at any point, with pause functionality and rally point tools available to manage the pace.

Multiplayer supports up to four participants through online connections. Options include free-for-all matches or Team Wipeout, where allied players share vision and work toward a joint victory condition. Both single-player and multiplayer take place on fresh procedural islands that vary in terrain, including highlands, meadows, lowlands, cliff staircases, forests, and gold deposits.

World Events and Island Variety

Each island generates unique layouts that shape resource placement and defensive opportunities. Mid-match events introduce additional challenges and rewards. A Gold Rush reveals a rich deposit that draws multiple kingdoms into competition, with risks from opportunistic thieves along return routes. The Skeleton Surge awakens undead forces at specific sites, turning bone collection into a high-value activity. Cave Lairs house packs of venomous creatures protecting hoards and rare traits, requiring players to clear the area before claiming the contents. Additional events are noted as planned for future updates.

Is It Worth Playing?

Tiny Banners suits players who enjoy compact strategy experiences with simulation elements and a focus on individual unit identity. The combination of resource loops, persistent unit progression, and adaptive AI creates repeatable sessions without requiring large time commitments. Procedural maps and world events add variety to each run, while the option for local saves and pauses supports relaxed single-player play. Multiplayer emphasizes direct competition or cooperation among small groups. As a title developed by a single person with hand-crafted assets and traditional AI logic, it prioritizes charm and mechanical clarity over expansive scope. Those drawn to casual strategy titles centered on kingdom growth and last-kingdom-standing objectives will find the core loop engaging once it releases.
