Monarchs at Play is a turn-based 4X strategy game without endless marathons or unnecessary micromanagement. Simple rules: every action in the game is handled through constructing buildings. Combine them to maximize your production, unleash satisfying adjacency bonuses, explore new terrain and engage with rival monarchs.
Play solo or with friends – every match usually lasts around one hour, perfect for game nights or relaxed sessions.
Every monarch offers unique abilities and a dedicated campaign mission, doubling as an interactive onboarding. Don’t worry about getting overwhelmed like in classic grand-strategy games :)
Exploit by combining buildings for adjacency effects
Buildings produce resources based on surrounding terrain and neighboring structures.
Examples: A Lumberjack generates Material for each Forest within 1 tile range. A Sawmill doubles the production of nearby Lumberjacks. A Guild Hall boosts both Lumberjacks and Quarries within 2 tiles range.
Some economic buildings can even benefit from opponents’ structures, opening clever trading opportunities.
Explore new tiles and unlock stronger buildings
Reveal the map using Lookouts or other buildings with high sight range. Find valuable terrain or spot rival monarchs – before they spot you.
Powerful buildings are unlocked by clever placement patterns. For example: placing 13 buildings within 2 tiles of a Library unlocks advanced infrastructure like the Guild Hall or Market Hall.
Expand to claim new territory
Use Housing buildings to expand your realm.
New territory means new opportunities, more adjacency options, and ultimately the production boost you need to become the greatest monarch in the afterlife.

Engage other monarchs through peaceful trade or direct domination.
Military buildings exert pressure on nearby tiles. When you apply the most pressure to an enemy tile, you begin conquering it. After 3 turns, the tile becomes yours – granting you a Glory-producing Monument and the satisfaction of weakening your opponent.
