Borrowing from the auto-battler genre, each unit has their own abilities, belongs to a set of classes and can be leveled to gain health and additional abilities. Having multiple units of one class in your shell unlocks class bonuses. As you fight through different biomes you earn currency which can be spent on buying/ upgrading units and different kinds of items.

Over 120 items can be earned and bought as rewards from elites, bosses and certain map encounters. Passive items apply a permanent modification, consumables trigger unique one-time effects, active items grant abilities/ skills which can be used multiple times per battle and melee weapons provide a secondary way of outputting short range damage actively.
Create millions of interesting builds by choosing the perfect items for the units in your shell. If you want to stand against the flame, smart choices matter a lot!
Each run is different, as maps and levels are randomly generated and vary in complexity per biome. Some stages might be peaceful while others are riddled with biome specific obstacles and hazards. Choose the right path for your current build to move forward in your pursuit of the flame.
Strategy is not only important when buying units and equipping your shell, certain actions and items modify the HEAT LEVEL which dynamically changes the difficulty of the run. Higher heat reaps better rewards, but also makes fights harder. Will you play it save or risk burning yourself?
Do not expect to breeze through every biome, over 60 enemies, elites and bosses with different move sets stand in your way. Defeat bosses and elites for item crystals which contain passive items. Prepare for heated battles if you want to stand against THE FLAME.
If you manage to defeat THE FLAME with a specific shell, you unlock additional difficulty levels for it, called incandescence. Each incandescence level provides permanent modifiers to the run, from enemy health variation to manipulating the map generation.
And who knows what might happen if one manages to beat the highest incandescence...
