About HexLight

HexLight - about the game

HexLight is a deterministic turn-based tactics game set on a luminous hexagonal battlefield. Players command geometric units across a grid where every action follows fixed rules without random elements like dice rolls. The game blends strategy and indie sensibilities with casual accessibility, emphasizing planning, color manipulation, and chain reactions over luck.

Gameplay

The core loop revolves around commanding an army of shapes on a hex grid while managing three primary light families: red, green, and blue. Units start as solid colors, and attacks mix those colors until a unit reaches three distinct channels and whites out, often shattering into smaller forms. Triangles serve as fast attackers that initiate color conversions and target factory flags. Squares clear light at range and create temporary fields that aid conversions. Pentagons refract additional colors into units to enable breakups or bonus actions. Hexagons deliver ranged strikes exactly two hexes away while projecting defense. Circles operate on an upper layer, ignore many lower effects, add light to enemies, and can collide with one another.

Players activate one unit per turn and perform up to two combines by pairing matching shapes to progress from triangle to square, pentagon, hexagon, or circle. Mixed units can break apart into multiple lower shapes, opening paths and generating resources. Bonus moves from breakups, whiteouts, refractions, factory captures, and prism charges can be spent immediately for chains or banked for later bursts. Triangle momentum accumulates over the match, allowing expended attacks to yield extra moves after light storms. Factories produce triangles on controlled turns and trigger global burst rounds every tenth turn, while the central prism offers powerful one-use charges when claimed and held.

Light storms occur at turn 100, 200, and every hundred turns thereafter. These events introduce new neutral factories, rotate controlled flags between regions, and alter movement with transparent walls. The storms keep positions dynamic and reward adaptation rather than static setups. Five tutorials cover basic attacks, conversions, refractions, combines, and captures, while advanced puzzles test route planning and spatial awareness. The scenario editor supports custom placements, objectives, and turn limits for varied challenges.

Game Modes

Single-player options include seven AI difficulty levels, loadable saves, and simulations that run without player input. Hot seat allows local multiplayer on one computer for direct competition. Online formats support four configurations: 1v1 standoffs, 1v1v1 free-for-alls that reward negotiation and timely betrayal, 2v2 team coordination, and 3v3 six-color battles. All modes enforce the same deterministic rules, with state validation and replays ensuring synchronization across sessions. The editor and community scenarios expand replayability through user-created maps and objectives.

Core Mechanics and Strategy

Combat and production follow readable sequences where a single misplaced unit can block routes prepared over multiple turns. Color mixing creates conversion chains that propagate across the board, while factory control dictates long-term unit production and defensive positioning. The central prism grants scoring opportunities and charged abilities that shift momentum, such as shattering multiple units or flipping colors in a field. Light storms reset portions of the board and introduce new production sites, preventing any position from becoming permanently solved. Players track momentum, scores, and logs to anticipate several moves ahead, clearing landing zones or priming relays before opponents respond.

Is It Worth Playing?

HexLight suits players who prefer abstract strategy games built on planning and rule mastery rather than reflexes or chance. Its deterministic systems reward careful sequencing and adaptation to evolving board states, including periodic light storms that force fresh tactical adjustments. The combination of unit shapes, color families, factory management, and prism control creates layered decisions that scale from guided tutorials to complex multiplayer scenarios. Those who enjoy turn-based tactics with clear cause-and-effect outcomes will find depth in the chaining mechanics and momentum banking. The game remains accessible for casual sessions yet demands precise calculation for competitive play, making it a strong choice for strategy enthusiasts seeking consistent, skill-based matches without external variables.
